In Caraş-Severin, vast protected areas meet caves, waterscapes and engineering landmarks. Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park covers 23,185 hectares in the eastern part of the region. Its landscape follows the Cerna River basin, from its source to its confluence with the Belareca. As well as limestone cliffs and gorges, it includes alpine clearings, limestone ravines, thermal caves and thermomineral springs. A single national park thus reveals a remarkable variety of landscapes.

National parks, caves and bison

Semenic–Cheile Carașului National Park offers a distinct character of its own: Covering 36,051.5 hectares, it encompasses natural features of physical-geographical, botanical, hydrological, geological and speleological significance. Iron Gates Natural Park is nationally protected and classified as IUCN Category V. It spans the counties of Caraș-Severin and Mehedinți, lying mostly within the geographical region of the Danube Gorge. Near Mehadia, Râpa Neagră is a protected geological nature reserve in Category III, representing another clearly defined type of protected area.

The caves add an archaeological and spatial dimension to the region’s natural history. The galleries and chambers of Peștera Comarnic discovered to date measure 5,229 metres in total. Peștera Rolului is 108 metres long and consists of three chambers. At Peștera cu Oase, a system of twelve inner galleries provides the geological setting for a significant discovery: human remains found there are more than 35,000 years old. Bison are another feature of the area’s natural heritage. The bison reserve in Armeniș supports their successful reintroduction to their natural habitat and their effective conservation.

Hiking trails and longer excursions

Two trails with different time commitments are described for hiking. The Șopotu Nou–Cheile Nerei–Podul Bei–Sasca Română route is 24 kilometres long and takes about nine hours. The route from Sasca Română via Sasca Montană and Cascada Șușara to Cărbunari covers eight kilometres and takes about three hours. Comparing the estimated walking times can help you plan your day.

For a longer journey of discovery through the region, consider the Via Transilvanica: Its section through Caraș-Severin is called Terra Banatica and passes through more than 20 settlements in the county. It is intended for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. Check the current route before setting out on a longer trip.

Railways, museums and architectural history

The Oravița–Anina railway line combines engineering heritage with striking structures: There are 14 tunnels and 10 viaducts between the two stations. Oravița station is a starting point for the route and is listed as a historic monument; the railway line itself is recognised as an engineering heritage monument. If you are planning a train journey, check the latest service information in advance.

At the entrance to Reșița, the open-air Steam Locomotive Museum displays 16 exhibits from different periods of construction. They include the RESICZA locomotive, built in Reșița between 1872 and 1873 and counted among the first three steam locomotives built in southeastern Europe. The Oravița Ethnographic Museum offers another way to explore local history, with displays of traditional crafts, household products, food-related objects, looms and handicrafts from Țara Carașului. In Anina, the Catholic church in Steierdorf was built in 1872–1873 and is a nationally significant architectural monument.

The thermal bath on the left bank of the Cerna is also part of the area’s architectural history: Built in 1871, it comprises a pavilion building, a covered thermal-water pool and a hydrotherapy department in the enclosed pavilion.

Trei Ape: Water and winter sports

The Trei Ape holiday resort lies at an altitude of 850 metres on the shore of the Trei Ape reservoir. Water sports are practised on the lake; check local options as you plan your visit. The relatively consistent snow cover allows for winter sports over an extended part of the cold season, although conditions vary from year to year. Water activities and winter sports give the resort a different character at different times of year.

Getting there and choosing a travel focus

The Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park area can be reached from Timișoara and Caransebeș via the DN6/E70 to Băile Herculane, then along the DN67D through the Cerna Valley. Check road conditions before setting off. When choosing accommodation, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: caves and scenery, railway history, or activities at Lake Trei Ape, for example. This lets you tailor your search to the discoveries that interest you most, without committing to a set itinerary in advance.
