On a hill at the present-day edge of Rugi stands the āAdormirea Maicii Domnuluiā Church. Its location also tells the story of how the village has changed: the houses were moved farther down the slope, while the church remained isolated on the edge of the settlement. Together with the watermill and the traditions passed down through the generations, it offers a cultural perspective on Rugi that connects architectural history with the development of the village.
Church and Architectural History
The church was built in 1901. Its single-nave floor plan is 25 metres long and 8 metres wide; the building has a tower. āSingle-naveā describes a floor plan with one nave. The measurements give a clear idea of its proportions: the building is considerably longer than it is wide. Those interested in architecture can relate these specific features to the buildingās history without conflating its different periods.
Its history includes an 18th-century church that burned down in 1788 during the Austro-Turkish War. It was the predecessor of the present-day building. Following restoration work, the āAdormirea Maicii Domnuluiā Church was reconsecrated on 6 July 2011. The sequence of the predecessor building, the new church and its later restoration makes the local church history traceable over several centuries.
Local History and Location
Rugi was first documented in 1517, under its former name, Rusz. This first mention is a historical reference point, not the date the village was founded. The churchās location also reflects a change: it now stands on a hill at the edge of Rugi, after the village houses were moved farther down the slope. The elevated position and the present-day edge of the settlement are therefore useful landmarks when finding your way around.
Church and Regional Traditions
On 5 March 2019, the parish reported spiritual evenings during the second week of the Triodion. The programme at the time included church services and religious talks. If you are interested, ask in advance about possible dates.
An account of regional traditions mentions traditional Rugis on 15 and 16 August in 38 localities in CaraČ-Severin County, including Rugi. Before travelling, check whether an event has been announced for those dates.
Watermill and Getting Around
A description published in 2020 counts the Rugi watermill among the few mills with vertical waterwheels still preserved in CaraČ-Severin County. Alongside the churchās history, it represents another aspect of the local heritage: traditional milling technology.
