Porto De Mós can be explored through a range of themes: the history of the castle, sacred architecture, a former thermal power station repurposed as a cultural venue, and a disused railway line that is now suitable for walking and cycling. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on historic buildings and exhibitions or on actively exploring the Ecopista. Nature interpretation adds to these cultural and landscape themes.
Castle and transport routes
The current layout of Castelo de Porto de Mós is attributed to D. Sancho I and dated to the year 1200. The castle was originally built as a fortress to control and monitor the main transport routes through the Maciço Calcário Estremenho between Médio Tejo and Alta Estremadura. Its history therefore links the castle’s construction with the importance of this transport corridor.
A web app for smartphones is available for visitors to use independently on the “Histórias e Lendas de um Castelo Singular” tour. This allows you to explore the castle at your own pace; the tour is described as a standalone offering and is not tied to a guided visit. The historical background and the present-day tour provide two different points of reference: the attribution and date relate to the layout, while the app is for use during your visit.
Church and cultural venue
Igreja de São João Baptista is located in the oldest part of Vila Porto de Mós. Its Romanesque portal suggests that it is older than the other churches in Vila Porto de Mós. This comparative assessment makes the portal an important clue to the building’s history. A gilded wooden altarpiece is another distinctive feature of the church.
Central das Artes was created as a cultural venue by transforming a former thermal power station and opened on 25 June 2022. It contains several different exhibition spaces. The ceramic exhibition “Maneira do Juncal- Um Legado Inquebrável” can also be seen at Central das Artes. The venue thus brings together the history of a repurposed industrial building and a specific insight into ceramics.
Ecopista: a former railway line, now a route
The Ecopista de Porto de Mós was created along a former railway line that was used to transport coal from the 1930s to the 1950s. Today it is suitable for walking and cycling and forms part of the PR6 PMS – Rota do Carvão walking trail. The line’s former transport function and its present-day use give it two clearly distinct aspects: it tells the story of coal transport by rail while also offering a route for getting around on foot or by bike.
There are several interpretive viewpoints along the Ecopista. They help visitors better understand the surrounding landscape. The route therefore caters to two interests without requiring a particular way of getting around: you can learn about the landscape and explore the Ecopista either on foot or by bike.
Nature as another focus
The Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros is a relevant regional setting: it includes areas within the municipality of Porto de Mós. The Centro de Interpretação das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros focuses on interpreting natural features. For schools, the centre supports activities such as lessons, exhibition visits and talks. These school activities may change, so check what is on offer before your trip.
For a trip focused on cultural history, the castle, church and Central das Artes offer a variety of themes, from the history of fortifications and architecture to ceramics. If you would rather explore a route actively, the Ecopista offers the documented choice of walking or cycling. Nature interpretation provides another focus. This lets you choose what to explore in Porto De Mós based on what matters most for your trip.
