Juncal combines the history of its churches and town with ceramic art and a tradition of basket weaving with junco. The PR Fonte Falsa hiking trail also starts in Juncal. These different themes offer several starting points for planning your visit: historic buildings, local craft history or a hike with a set route length.
Hiking Trail and Leisure in the Town
The PR Fonte Falsa hiking trail starts in Juncal and is 7 km long. Check trail conditions before setting out. In town, Parque Verde do Juncal adds to the leisure options: it was inaugurated on 20 December 2015 and is a recreational space for all age groups, intended to promote an active lifestyle, health and well-being. As local facilities may change, check what is available before your visit.
Churches, Chapels and Festival Traditions
Igreja de São Miguel was rebuilt between 1770 and 1780 after being damaged by the 1755 earthquake. It stands on the site of an earlier chapel, which may have been dedicated to São Miguel as early as the 14th century. The tile panels are also part of the building’s history: in the nave, they depict scenes from the Old Testament, while in the main chapel they depict scenes from the New Testament. The different subjects are thus assigned to the church’s two areas.
West of Juncal, Capela de São Miguel do Peral stands on a small hill beside the path from the town center to the Ribeiro Valley. A mass is celebrated there each year during the São Miguel do Juncal festival. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the date in advance. Another chapel, Capela Nossa Senhora de Fátima, is a private place of worship attached to a manor house. Take its private status into account when planning, rather than assuming a visit will be possible. Joaquim Caetano had it built in fulfillment of a promise to Nossa Senhora de Fátima; it was inaugurated on 13 December 1942 during a pastoral visit to Juncal.
Ceramics and Junco Craftsmanship
The ceramic exhibition “Maneira do Juncal- Um Legado Inquebrável” is housed at the Real Factory Porto de Mós – Creative Hub. Its exhibition space recalls the history of the Real Fábrica do Juncal, which operated from 1770 to 1876. The Creative Hub itself is housed in the former Casa dos Calados; its original features were preserved during renovation. In this way, the history of ceramics and the architectural history of today’s exhibition venue sit side by side.
Basket weaving is also part of the local craft tradition: baskets were made in Juncal from junco, a plant that is widespread in the freguesia. The artwork “Homenagem às Cestas de Junco” by Hélder Silva aims to make Juncal’s identity visible. Another ceramic work is the “Painel de Azulejos de Nossa Senhora das Dores.” The tile panel is on the façade of a residential building on Rua da Carreira da Vila, near the site of the former Fábrica do Juncal.
Cruzeiro and Views over Juncal
On Monte Talho Redondo stands the Cruzeiro do Juncal, a tall cross associated with the faith of the local population. For many years, it was a place of pilgrimage during the feast of Saint Isidore, who is regarded as the patron saint of fields and farmers. This pilgrimage belongs to the historical tradition and does not describe a present-day event. From the Cruzeiro, panoramic views stretch across Juncal, taking in both the parish church and the built-up area. This landmark thus brings religious tradition and the townscape together in a distinct view.
