In Alqueidão da Serra, a Roman road, a monument commemorating Portuguese history and a viewpoint featuring a depiction of the Jurassic period offer different ways to explore the area’s history and landscape. There are also places to enjoy nature and leisure activities. The selection ranges from historical details to specific sports and recreational facilities.
History from Roman times to the Padrão
The Estrada Romana do Alqueidão da Serra was built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. Its broad date range clearly distinguishes it from the Padrão of Alqueidão da Serra, which was built in 1940. Padre Henrique Antunes Fernandes commissioned its construction to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Portuguese independence. The monument also commemorates the 300th anniversary of the restoration of the Portuguese kingdom in 1640.
The Padrão combines these historical references with striking design: it features a Latin cross, two swords engraved in relief and a royal crown. Its commemorative purpose can therefore be understood not only through the dates, but also from the forms described.
The parish church also reflects a long history: it originated as an old chapel dedicated to São José and was elevated to a parish church in 1615. An image of Nossa Senhora de Fátima is venerated in the matriz de São José de Alqueidão da Serra. The windmill near Cabeça do Alqueidão da Serra offers another connection to local tradition. It is one of the local mills where grain is still ground into flour using stone millstones.
Nature and views
At Parque de Lazer da Lapa, you can experience the surrounding nature of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. Abundant water flowed from the park’s Lapa thousands of years ago. This landscape feature therefore belongs to a distant past; the natural area is also a destination in its own right for anyone seeking to explore the surroundings of the natural park.
Miradouro Jurássico de Alqueidão da Serra offers a different perspective. It is located at an altitude of 500 metres and provides views of the sea. Its 15 limestone blocks represent the main periods of the Jurassic. Here, the view and geological display go hand in hand: as well as looking out over the landscape, visitors can see how the Jurassic periods have been represented in the design.
Leisure facilities and route planning
Parque de Desporto e Lazer da Chã has toilets and changing rooms, a skatepark, a BMX track and a sports field. It also has a children’s playground and space for camping and barbecuing. Several leisure facilities are therefore available at this named location. Check the on-site arrangements for the toilets and changing rooms before travelling.
For route planning, the PR7.1 PMS variant of the Rota da Calçada Romana connects the route’s starting point in Alqueidão da Serra with Covão de Oles. It adds a specific connection, with a starting point and destination, to the individual named places. If you organise your trip around your interests, you can consider historical sites, nature and views, leisure facilities and the route as different highlights.
