Mendiga combines local history with defining landscape and land-use themes. The present-day parish church stands in the town center; windmills can be found on the heights, and PR2 PMS is a circular hiking trail across the Mendiga Plateau. The Arco da Memória adds its own historical dimension, while Telhados de Água brings together recreation and environmental interest. The area therefore offers different points of interest when choosing accommodation: religious heritage, a historic boundary marker, natural stone and landscape.

Local History, Boundary Markers and Natural Stone

Mendiga’s present-day parish church is located in the town center. It was inaugurated in 1968 and is dedicated to Saint Julian. The Moinhos da Mendiga are among the windmills on the heights of Mendiga. The town’s traditional landmarks thus place a building in the center alongside windmills at a higher elevation: visitors wishing to take in both religious heritage and windmills during their stay will find two distinct themes.

Another cultural landmark is the Arco da Memória. It is located in the Freguesia Arrimal-Mendiga in the Serra dos Candeeiros. Cistercian monks built the arch toward the end of the 16th century to mark the boundary of lands that had been donated in the 12th century by D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. The dates therefore refer to two different events: the donation in the 12th century and the construction of the boundary marker toward the end of the 16th century. Those interested in its historical significance can keep this chronology in mind; the arch does not date from the time of the donation itself.

Natural stone also shapes Mendiga’s character. The area is known for quarrying natural stone and is particularly associated with the white paving known as “calçada branca,” which is used around the world. This connection to paving adds a material dimension to the historic buildings: alongside the church, windmills and Arco, the use of stone can also be understood as part of the area’s identity.

Recreation and Hiking Landscapes

Telhados de Água is a recreational area in Mendiga for local residents and people interested in the environment. The project was designed to replenish rainwater so it could be used by the people of Mendiga. The area includes a picnic spot with a barbecue and a restroom. It may be necessary to contact the municipal association in advance to use the facilities. Telhados de Água can therefore be considered a distinct focus alongside the historical landmarks: recreation, the community use of water and interest in environmental issues are at its heart.

PR2 PMS offers a distinct focus on the landscape. The circular hiking trail crosses the Mendiga Plateau, starts in Cabeça das Pombas and heads west to the edge of the plateau. Its scenery includes traditional olive groves and small stands of holm oaks and cork oaks, while also offering wide views over the Mendiga Valley. The hike thus brings together a cultural landscape, small wooded areas and expansive views across the valley. Visitors wishing to balance local history and landscape during their stay can consider PR2 PMS as a hiking option alongside the cultural attractions.
