Discover Fajã Grande through its striking landscape features, hiking trails, swimming facilities and architectural heritage. To help you decide where to go, it is worth noting the differences: waterfalls and protected areas offer different points of interest from swimming facilities or the history of local buildings.
Landscape and waterfalls
Fajã Grande is a lava-formed fajã with a fossil cliff coast about 300 m high. On the landward side, Rocha da Fajã borders the settlement; in places, its cliff face is more than 600 m high. These figures refer to different landforms: around 300 m for the fossil cliff coast, and more than 600 m for sections of Rocha da Fajã.
Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro is a lake surrounded by several waterfalls. It is located in the protected landscape area of the Central Zone and Western Cliffs of Flores Natural Park and is part of a geosite in the Azores Geopark. Fajã Grande is also classified as a geosite in the Azores Geopark. Poço do Bacalhau is a distinct landscape feature: a waterfall more than 100 m high. Thus, a lake surrounded by waterfalls and a single waterfall over 100 m high offer different natural attractions.
Hiking trails and conditions
The PR3FLO hiking trail to Fajã Grande crosses the Morro Alto and Pico da Sé Nature Reserve, as well as the protected landscape area of the Central Zone and Western Cliffs. These protected areas define the route. For the PR2FLO Lajedo–Fajã Grande hiking trail, a different practical consideration applies: after rainy days, particular care is recommended because of watercourses and potentially slippery stone underfoot, along with suitable footwear. You can therefore assess the two routes based on the aspects noted for each, without assuming their conditions are the same.
Swimming facilities
The Porto da Fajã Grande bathing area has a sunbathing area, a car park, toilets, showers, a barbecue area and a bar. It is supervised during the bathing season. The natural swimming pools of Fajã Grande also have a sunbathing area, a car park, toilets, showers and a bar. These facilities offer a practical guide when choosing where to swim; seasonal supervision is specifically stated for Porto da Fajã Grande.
Architectural heritage and history
Igreja de São José in Fajã Grande, in the municipality of Lajes das Flores, developed from a chapel dedicated to São Jorge, built in 1755. The chapel was enlarged between 1847 and 1849 and consecrated in 1850. The church preserves centuries-old depictions of the Virgin Mary, Senhora da Saúde and the Archangel São Miguel. The sequence of chapel, enlargement and consecration places the building in a specific historical context; the depictions mentioned add religious imagery.
A different architectural detail can be found at Império do Espírito Santo de Cima in Fajã Grande, Lajes das Flores, built in 1886. Its unusual façade features a door flanked by two small hexagonal windows. Lugar da Cuada in Fajã Grande is designated as a site of municipal interest. The architectural heritage thus encompasses different forms: a church with a long history, a building with a distinctive façade motif and a designated ensemble.
If you are considering Fajã Grande as a travel destination, you can choose your focus based on landscape, hiking, swimming or architectural heritage. When choosing accommodation, the main question is which of these aspects you would like to make the focus of your trip.
