If you are considering Horta as a travel destination, you can base your decision on two distinct themes: the landscape around Porto Pim and the city’s cultural heritage. The specific places range from a trail in a protected area to churches, museums and a coastal fortress.

Monte da Guia and the Entre Montes trail

The Entre Montes circular hiking trail PRC08FAI is located in the Monte da Guia Protected Landscape Area; Praia de Porto Pim is also part of this protected area. The loop starts and ends at the car park next to the beach. The route as described leads from the area around Marina da Horta to Praia de Porto Pim. This distinguishes the beach as the starting and finishing point from the stated direction, which begins in the area around the marina.

Whaling history in Porto Pim

Fábrica da Baleia de Porto Pim is located on Monte da Guia in Horta. Its permanent exhibition includes all the original machinery from the former whaling station. Visitors pass through several rooms where the complete processing of sperm whales is presented: how oil and fat were extracted, and how meat, bones and blood were processed into meal.

The machinery and processing stages offer two complementary insights into the facility: one focuses on its technical equipment, the other on the processing sequence. The Scrimshaw Museum in Horta presents another facet of the maritime cultural heritage. It displays works made from whale and sperm whale material, carved and documented by the island’s fishermen. While the Fábrica focuses on machinery and processing, the Scrimshaw Museum focuses on the carved works.

Baroque churches and a coastal fortress

Igreja Matriz do Santíssimo Salvador in Horta is one of the largest places of worship in the Azores. It was built in the Baroque style from 1680 onwards. Highlights of the interior include gilded woodwork and narrative tile panels. If you are interested in architecture, you can focus here on the relationship between the building’s design and its interior features.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Horta is also a Baroque building: it was built in the late 17th century. The two churches thus offer different examples of the same style, with construction dates in the late 17th century. At the Matriz, the gilded woodwork and tile panels add specific interior details to the experience of the building.

Castelo de SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo was built in the 17th century on a rocky point on the coast. It served as the main defensive structure of Porto Pim Bay. Today, it is home to Ecoteca do Faial, an organisation that raises awareness of environmental protection. Its historical defensive purpose and its present-day environmental education role show two distinct functions of the same building.

Maritime connections in Horta

Marina da Horta is also one of the town’s maritime landmarks. It has 300 permanent berths. Together with the collections on whaling history, places like these add different aspects of maritime life to the picture of Horta: port infrastructure, the processing of sperm whales and carved works created by island fishermen.

Different interests may take precedence when deciding on your trip: Monte da Guia and Porto Pim put the focus on landscapes, while the churches, fortress and museums offer insights into architecture, history and collections. Horta thus offers several clearly distinct themes to help you choose your travel destination.
