The Grande Rota de São Jorge (Este), GR01SJO, connects Topo and Fajã dos Cubres along a linear route of around 40 kilometres. Other hiking trails lead from Serra do Topo to a range of destinations. Together with protected landscapes, viewpoints and historic sites, Topo offers several perspectives on São Jorge.

Hiking trails and a range of destinations

The GR01SJO alternates between the interior uplands of São Jorge and steep slopes that descend to the island’s Fajãs. The first stage begins at the Ponta do Topo Lighthouse. From the route, there are views of Ilhéu do Topo and the island of Terceira. It also passes historic buildings: Casa dos Tiagos, a 19th-century building classified as being of public interest, and Convento Franciscano de São Diogo.

The PR01SJO follows a different route: it starts at the Serra do Topo wind farm, passes through Caldeira de Santo Cristo and ends in Fajã dos Cubres. The PR02SJO also starts next to the wind farm, but leads to Fajã dos Vimes. The main considerations when choosing between them are therefore their different destinations and the PR01SJO’s route through the caldera. The Grande Rota, meanwhile, connects Topo and Fajã dos Cubres along a longer linear route.

Protected landscapes and wildlife

Ilhéu do Topo is part of the “Ilhéu do Topo e Costa Adjacente” Special Protection Area and is a bird nesting site on the eastern side of São Jorge. One striking seasonal feature: in summer, cows swim to the islet to graze. The protected area and this recurring practice give the islet importance for birdlife as well as a distinctive place in the island’s landscape.

Lagoa da Caldeira de Santo Cristo lies along the PR01SJO. It is classified as a protected landscape and an area of cultural and landscape interest. It is also important for resident birds and migratory species. The caldera is also considered a sanctuary for bodyboarding and surfing. If you plan to take part in water sports there, check the conditions before your activities.

Viewpoints for an outdoor break

Miradouro / Merendário do Topo is on the regional road next to the former entrance to Vila do Topo. From there, you can see the island of Terceira. The viewpoint has a landscaped green area with facilities for picnics and outdoor meals. If you plan to use them, check their condition before your visit.

Geosite Ponta do Topo is another highlight: it is of regional importance and has scientific, educational and geotourism interest. Together with the views of Terceira from the viewpoint and the GR01SJO, it shows how the landscape here can be discovered from different perspectives.

Church history and festivals

The main church, N. Sra. do Rosário, was built in 1761 after an older 16th-century church was destroyed by the earthquake known as the “Mandate of God.” The church features Baroque elements both inside and out. These include a gilded main altar, a Baroque pulpit and paintings of art-historical significance. Its history and furnishings add a specific perspective on Topo’s religious heritage to the nature and hiking themes.

The festival in honour of the patron saint of the main church takes place on the first weekend of October; the programme may vary from year to year. Another tradition is the celebration of the Divine Holy Spirit, whose dates follow the religious calendar. It includes a Pentecost Mass, a coronation and the distribution of soup to the community. The celebration also includes alms in the form of meat, bread and wine.
