There are several clear themes to consider when choosing a stay in Urzelina: volcanic history, religious and architectural heritage, and activities on the water. You can plan your trip around whether you are most interested in the 1808 eruption, local traditions, or the Portinhos dive site. These themes are quite distinct, ranging from geological context and buildings to specific water activities.

Volcanic history from crater to sea

At the center of it all is Mistério da Urzelina: its basaltic lava flows were formed by the historic volcanic eruption of 1808. Their source is associated with Bocas de Fogo, also known as Caldeirinhas. This group of craters lies on the island’s central volcanic ridge. From there, the lava flows moved south down the slopes and reached the sea near Urzelina. Mistério da Urzelina is a geosite of the Azores Geopark of national importance and of scientific, educational, cultural, and geotourism interest.

The church tower offers a different perspective on the same eruption: Mistério represents the formation and course of the lava, while the Torre da igreja da Urzelina represents the eruption’s impact on a building.

Church tower, fort, and festival culture

The Torre da igreja da Urzelina is the surviving remnant of the former church of Urzelina, which was buried by the 1808 volcanic eruption. The Forte da Urzelina, also known as “Castelinho,” was built to protect the Urzelina pier from attacks by pirates and privateers. The two structures thus point to different historical contexts: the eruption’s impact on the church and the former protection of the pier.

The Império do Divino Espírito Santo de São Mateus is used to display the crown, flag, and staffs of the Cult of the Holy Spirit. The Rural Exhibition Centre of Urzelina offers a different historical insight: it is located in former orange warehouses, where fruit was stored for later export through the port of Urzelina.

Local customs include traditional festivals in honor of the Holy Spirit and the Trinity. Sweet bread, cheese, and wine are distributed to the entire population. Alongside the buildings, religious traditions and the communal sharing of food and drink are therefore central.

Portinhos and the harbor

Activities at Portinhos da Urzelina include beginner diving, night diving, and snorkeling. The area is well sheltered and has few currents, although sea conditions remain variable. Check them before entering the water. The dive site is directly accessible from the coast via the Urzelina tidal pools.

At a depth of 8 meters, the dive site includes a broad grotto. Natural light enters through an opening—a specific feature that distinguishes this underwater site from the above-water architectural and historical sites. Porto da Urzelina offers a different connection to the water: the swimming area was created from former harbor facilities.

Cycling as another focus

The Trilho EcolĂłgico da Urzelina is another local activity: it includes a 3 km cycling route and was inaugurated in March 2023. Cycling thus adds another way to plan your stay, alongside the cultural and water-related themes.
