An art-historical look at Vila Ruiva brings together fresco painting and Roman construction history. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Represa is included in the Rota do Fresco, a route dedicated to mural painting. The chapel dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and combines frescoes with azulejo decoration. Beside the chapel, the Roman dam preserves a massive wall and the remains of a Roman reservoir that was used for agriculture. The visible section of the wall is about 80 metres long. Sacred art and a structure with an agricultural function stand side by side here as distinct historical subjects.
Church and architectural history
The Igreja Matriz de Vila Ruiva also represents another facet of the local cultural heritage. It is classified as an imóvel de Interesse Público, or a monument of public interest. It is said to have been built from 1523 by Tomás Fernandes, a master builder from Vila Ruiva. Here, a clearly stated heritage status meets a cautiously dated building history.
Routes with different reference points
The Rota das Igrejas e Miradouros starts and ends at Praça da República in Vila Ruiva’s Jardim. This identifies a specific square as both the starting and ending point. The seventh stage of the Via Nascente runs from Cuba through Vila Ruiva to Alvito, Águas de Peixe and Viana do Alentejo. It places Vila Ruiva in a sequence of several places. The Rota do Canal is a hiking and all-terrain cycling route.
The route details offer different points of reference: a start and finish at the same square, a described sequence of stages, and a route with two named ways of getting around. If you plan to follow one of them, check the latest route information before setting out, as conditions may change.
Roman structures and their functions
The Roman bridge over the Ribeira de Odivelas was part of the route connecting Beja and Évora. It has 26 arches, separated by round-arched openings. Its historical role differs from that of the dam: a reservoir and its agricultural use define the latter, while the bridge connected Beja and Évora. The two Roman structures can therefore be considered in terms of their different functions.
