Cabeça Gorda lies at the highest point in the surrounding region. The town’s character is reflected in its varied natural landscapes and a mushroom tradition that connects the countryside with regional cuisine. The Parque Biológico, the forested Perímetro Florestal and Silarca – Festival do Cogumelo each offer a different perspective on the area. The history of the area between Cabeça Gorda and Salvada adds another dimension to your exploration.

Montado, forest and trails

The Parque Biológico da Cabeça Gorda covers 320 hectares and consists mainly of Montado landscape and wild-growing plants. The Perímetro Florestal de Cabeça Gorda e Salvada is now entirely forested, with cork oaks and eucalyptus among its dominant tree species. The nature theme thus ranges from Montado and wild-growing plants to a fully forested area with these tree species.

The local visitor facilities include walking and hiking trails. The Centro de Interpretação dos Recursos Naturais is also located in the Parque Biológico of the Perímetro Florestal de Cabeça Gorda e Salvada. Cabeça Gorda lies 12 kilometres south of the capital of the Baixo Alentejo. This location provides a geographical reference point for the landscape, while the trails offer another way to experience the local natural environment.

Mushrooms as a nature and food theme

Foraging for wild-growing mushrooms is one of the activities in Cabeça Gorda. Silarca – Festival do Cogumelo is a seasonal tradition associated with March. It celebrates the regional mushroom Amanita ponderosa and includes regional products and gastronomic offerings. The mushroom is therefore a focus both as part of nature and in regional cuisine.

The 2025 Silarca programme included a mycological walk in the Parque Biológico da Cabeça Gorda. A workshop and a tasting of wild-growing mushrooms with Zhivko Zhelyazkov were also on the programme. The culinary activity Pão e Sabores do Alentejo took place at Monte da Mata in the Parque Biológico. These examples show how the programme brought together experiences in nature and food; event schedules may change for future visits. If you are planning around a particular offering, check the dates in the relevant programme.

Historical traces and Cante Alentejano

The area between Cabeça Gorda and Salvada is connected with the history of the Islamic period and the subsequent Reconquista. Local historical accounts also consider it possible that Cabeça Gorda and Salvada originated during the period of Arab occupation, which began in 702 AD. This possibility remains part of the traditional interpretation.

A local memory is also preserved in the name Rua da Estalagem: it recalls that Cabeça Gorda once served as a support point for travellers. The past can thus be explored both in the broader regional context and through a single street name.

Cante Alentejano is also part of the local culture. A report from July 2024 names Coral da Freguesia da Cabeça Gorda as host of the Encontro de Cante Alentejano in Cabeça Gorda and describes the event as its 24th edition. Together with the landscapes and the mushroom theme, this cultural connection offers another way to discover the town.
