Corte do Pinto lies on the right bank of the Chança, a tributary of the Guadiana. The town’s character also includes the mining heritage of São Domingos: the mining complex extends across the parishes of Corte do Pinto, Santana de Cambas and Espírito Santo in the municipality of Mértola, Beja District. Those interested in industrial history will find a range of traces here—from the technical facilities and former workers’ settlement to the stories of people connected with mining.

The Mine’s History in Figures and Traces

Mining activity in the São Domingos region is said to have begun as early as the Chalcolithic period. During its operating life, the Mina de São Domingos was part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt and was considered Portugal’s largest and most important copper pyrite deposit. A total of 25 million tonnes of copper was extracted during the mine’s active years. Pyrite extraction ended in 1965, and the mine closed a year later.

The surviving remains include a Roman gallery and 27 vertical shafts. The complex also included an electricity power station, described as the first in the Alentejo. The history of transport is also part of this heritage: a private railway line approximately 18 kilometres long connected the mine to Pomarão. The different details convey the scale of the mining operation and its technical infrastructure without reducing its history to production figures.

Remains of two significant hillforts were also discovered in the parish of Corte do Pinto, including the Castro da Corte de S. Domingos. These archaeological traces sit alongside the more recent industrial history and broaden the picture of the region’s long history of human activity.

Work and Everyday Life in the Mining Complex

The Casa do Mineiro – Centro de Documentação is the first permanent site of the Museu da Mina de São Domingos. It recreates the living space of a mining family. The Centro de Documentação collects and archives photographs, documents and material evidence relating to the mining complex’s 150-year history. The two perspectives complement one another: the portrayal of family life and the preservation of materials documenting the mine’s development.

The former mining settlement is also part of this picture. Its single-storey terraced houses had whitewashed façades; paths and squares were unpaved, with an earth surface. The former site is presented as an open-air museum, illustrating life during the mining era and the different stages of ore extraction and processing.

The PR10 MTL – Rota do Minério passes through the Mina de São Domingos and by mining infrastructure and former settlements. The stops and traces mentioned along the route include former workers’ quarters, workshops and abandoned machinery. The route also follows former smuggling paths, connecting themes from the industrial past with another historical use of the trails.

More of the Region

Near Corte do Pinto is the Albufeira da Tapada Grande, a recreation area and river beach in the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana, close to the Mina de São Domingos. This connection to the landscape adds another regional focus to the history of the mining complex.

The parish also has craft and culinary traditions: goat’s and sheep’s cheeses are among the local products, and basket weaving with reed and willow is a known craft tradition. A fair takes place in Corte do Pinto every year on the second Sunday in September; check that year’s programme before travelling.
