Alvito sits on elevated ground in the Alentejo plain and offers far-reaching views. Some of the white houses have doorframes in the Manueline style. Together with churches, chapels and Castelo de Alvito, these features shape the town’s cultural character.
Architecture and frescoes in Alvito
Castelo de Alvito is a fortified palace with a rectangular floor plan and an inner courtyard. The castle was inaugurated as a Pousada de Portugal in 1993. In Praça da República, the Pelourinho stands opposite the Torre da Fonte of the castle. Its top is designed in the Manueline style—another example of how this architectural language appears on different buildings in the town.
The religious buildings also bring together different periods and stylistic features. Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, Alvito’s parish church, was built from the ground up towards the end of the 13th century; its exterior façade features elements of Mudéjar architecture. The frescoes in Capela das Almas were painted by José de Escobar in 1603.
Ermida de São Sebastião has the form of a fortified temple typical of the Alentejo and features Manueline-Mudéjar characteristics. It was probably built towards the end of the 15th century. Its design and dating lend it a distinct historical character, before you turn your attention to the trails around Alvito.
Two circular walking trails, two time frames
The PR2 Memórias dos Moinhos de Alvito circular trail is 15.4 kilometres long and takes approximately four to five hours to walk. It follows rural paths. At 6.3 kilometres and approximately two hours, the PR3 Rota de Santa Luzia is the shorter of the two listed routes; it also follows rural paths. In terms of time, the PR3 is likewise the shorter alternative at approximately two hours, compared with the four to five hours you can allow for the PR2.
The PR3 starts and ends at Ermida de São Sebastião in Rossio de Alvito. The route passes through centuries-old olive groves on its way to Capela de Santa Luzia. As well as its approximate duration, this route has two distinct buildings as landmarks: the chapel at the start and finish, and Capela de Santa Luzia along the way.
The Rota do Fresco offers another cultural perspective. It includes visits to frescoes in Alvito, Cuba, Portel, Vidigueira and Viana do Alentejo. The Rota do Fresco is also accessible to people with reduced mobility. The frescoes are therefore not limited to a single building in Alvito, but can be found across several towns.
Festivals and processions throughout the year
The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Assunção honours Alvito’s patron saint and takes place every year on the last weekend of August. The Procissão do Senhor Jesus dos Passos is also held annually, but follows the fourth Sunday of Lent; its date therefore varies with the Lenten calendar. The Procissão do Senhor Morto takes place on Good Friday and is one of Alvito’s most solemn processions.
The Feira dos Santos is also part of the events calendar: it takes place in Alvito on 1 November and is also known as the Feira dos Frutos Secos. The festivals and processions follow different calendar dates. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.
