A bell in Vidigueira’s bell tower bears three distinctive marks: an engraved Cross of Christ, the Gama coat of arms and the year 1520. Details like these take you straight into the town’s history. At the same time, Vinho de Talha shapes the community’s cultural identity: Vidigueira is also the name of a wine region with a protected designation of origin.

Vinho de Talha: production, exhibition and festival

The Centro Interpretativo do Vinho de Talha opened on 11 November 2020. It is dedicated to interpreting and scientifically and technologically communicating the intangible cultural heritage associated with the production of this traditional wine. Using augmented reality, the exhibition traces the history of Vinho de Talha from Roman times to the present day. It also explains the production cycle, from viticulture and production in clay amphorae to the tavern.

The Casa das Talhas in Vidigueira also offers visits focused on the traditional production of Vinho de Talha. The Centro Interpretativo is listed as open to visitors Tuesday to Friday from 09:30 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the hours are 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 17:30. Check the opening hours and visit schedule before you arrive.

In Vila de Frades, Vitifrades brings together wine tradition and culture. The event is held annually, usually in December; specific dates may vary from one edition to the next. The programme includes tastings of Vinho de Talha from local wineries and regional specialities, cultural and musical performances, a market featuring regional products and crafts, as well as conferences and workshops. The programme may also change from one edition to the next. A monument in Vila de Frades honours the men and women of the community who work throughout the year to preserve the heritage of Vinho de Talha.

Frescoes, memory and historic traces

Religious buildings reveal a variety of images. The Ermida de Santa Clara preserves murals featuring angels and scenes from the life of Saint Clare. The Capela de São Brás, believed to date back to the 17th century, features frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of Jesus Christ and the Holy Family, as well as images of saints and angels. Large mural panels in the Ermida de Santo António dos Açores tell the story of the life of Saint Anthony, including his sermons. From there, you can enjoy views over Vila de Frades and Vidigueira.

Vila de Frades is also home to literary and monastic heritage. The Casa de Fialho de Almeida is the writer’s birthplace; three marble plaques on its exterior walls commemorate him. D. Francisco da Gama and D. Guiomar de Vilhena founded the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção in Vila de Frades in 1545. It was a Franciscan monastery for men and belonged to the Piedade Province. The Torre do Relógio de Vila de Frades probably dates back to the 16th century. It is one of the few clocks in Portugal operated by a pendulum and winding mechanism.

Another chapter of history leads to Vidigueira: the church of the Convento de Nossa Senhora das Relíquias lies about 2 km from the town. It housed Vasco da Gama’s remains from 1539 until they were transferred to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in 1898. The Menir Mac Abraão reaches even further back in time. It dates from the Neo-Chalcolithic period, the 4th or 3rd millennium BC, and is marked with geometric incisions, including circles and dotted lines. At the Ruínas Romanas de São Cucufate, discovered wall paintings helped secure the site’s inclusion in the Rota dos Frescos.

Trails through vineyards and olive groves

For those interested in hiking, two trails offer different routes: the PR1 VDG Pelas Vinhas de SĂŁo Cucufate starts in Vidigueira. The PER2 Trilhos Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe connects Vidigueira and Vila de Frades through vineyards and olive groves. Information boards mark the route, which is about 12 km long. As local trail conditions can affect your hike, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The Rota do Vinho de Talha crosses the Alentejo, with its epicentre in the Município da Vidigueira. It offers close contact with landscapes, diverse culture and a history stretching back thousands of years. This means the wine theme can be explored not only through production and events, but also as part of the area’s cultural and historical character.

A signposted access path to the Ermida de Santo António dos Açores starts at the EN 258, roughly opposite Vila de Frades. Check the path conditions before your visit. What else you discover depends on whether you are interested in wine traditions, historic sites, frescoes or trails through the landscape.
