At the Centro Interpretativo do Vinho de Talha, an augmented reality exhibition traces the history of Talha wine from Roman times to the present day. It explains the production cycle, from the vine to making wine in the talhas and serving it in the tavern. Visitors can also experience the aromas and sounds of the vineyards, local sayings and Cante.

Talha Wine and Festivals

The municipal Centro Interpretativo do Vinho de Talha is located in the Vila de Frades parish, in the municipality of Vidigueira. Anyone interested in the region’s winemaking tradition can combine a visit to the centre with a look at local events: Vitifrades celebrates the winemaking identity of Vila de Frades, local traditions and the region’s cultural heritage. The annual festival is usually held in December.

Vitifrades includes tastings of Talha wine straight from local wine cellars. The programme also features tastings of regional cuisine and a fair showcasing regional products and handicrafts. Dates and programme details vary with each edition. SĂŁo Martinho na Capital do Vinho de Talha is another seasonal offering. It includes visits to traditional Talha wine cellars, wine tourism programmes offered by producers and wine tastings. Dates and participating producers may vary.

The Festas em Honra de SĂŁo Cucufate take place in summer and combine religious, cultural and leisure activities. The traditional programme includes a solemn Mass and a procession through the streets; the festivities also attract visitors. The annual calendar thus features a wine festival usually held in December and a summer festival with religious and cultural events. Dates may vary from one edition to another.

Explore the Wine Landscape on Foot

The Trilho do Vinho de Talha passes through vineyards, olive groves and Montado woodland in the Vila de Frades parish. One edition of the trail offered different formats: the fifth edition included a 12 km run and an 8 km walk. These details apply to that edition; the formats may change from one edition to another. This makes the landscape a distinct focus for your trip planning, without conflating the sporting events.

Roman and Medieval Traces

The Roman Villa of São Cucufate was a large agricultural estate used both for farming and as the owner’s residence. Wall paintings discovered in the ruins helped place the site on the Route of the Frescoes. The history of the site extends beyond the Roman era: during the Muslim period, a community of monks lived there, and a medieval cemetery belonging to these monks was also discovered behind the villa.

The different periods offer distinct ways to explore the history of SĂŁo Cucufate: the estate reflects agriculture and residential life, while the wall paintings and the cemetery discovered later point to further historical traces. Visitors particularly interested in archaeological evidence will find several aspects to distinguish as they explore the site.

Churches, Frescoes and Architectural History

The Igreja Matriz de Vila de Frades was built in the Baroque style between 1696 and 1707. Its high altar is considered one of the finest in the Alentejo region. The origins of the Capela de São Brás are believed to date back to the 17th century. Its frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus, the Holy Family, saints and angels. Visits to the chapel must be requested from the Junta de Freguesia de Vila de Frades by calling 284 441 762.

The Igreja da MisericĂłrdia was probably built between the 16th and 17th centuries. It has a gilded carved altar, thought to date from the first half of the 18th century. The church opens during religious celebrations, including Easter and the Festas em Honra de SĂŁo Cucufate. This limited opening period provides a distinct reason to visit and should be taken into account when planning.

The Torre do Relógio is also part of the town’s architectural history; its original construction is believed to date back to the 16th century. The tower’s clock is one of the few in Portugal operated by a pendulum and rope. In the centre of Praça de 25 de Abril stands the Chafariz de Vila de Frades. After replacing the old pillory, the fountain became a symbol of liberal society.

Literature and Practical Planning

Three marble commemorative plaques are mounted on the exterior walls of the Casa de Fialho de Almeida. Fialho de Almeida was born in Vila de Frades on 7 May 1857 and became one of the prominent scholars of Portuguese literature around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Centro Interpretativo do Vinho de Talha is open Tuesday to Friday from 09:30 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, it is open from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 17:30. Check the opening hours before your visit. Visits to the chapel must be requested from the Junta de Freguesia; festival dates depend on the relevant edition.
