The Villa Romana do Monte da Chaminé reflects the long history of the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo: it was inhabited from the 1st to the 6th century AD. Archaeological excavations there uncovered a cellar used for agricultural purposes. The Museu Municipal takes visitors from these Roman traces to the region’s tangible and intangible traditions.

Museum and Sacred Art

The Museu Municipal de Ferreira do Alentejo collects, preserves, researches, interprets and presents the heritage of the municipality. Its six exhibition units cover topics such as archaeology, sacred art, wine and Cante, the municipal archive, and traditional arts. The NĂşcleo Sede has spaces for temporary and thematic exhibitions, an educational service and a laboratory. The museum also displays a 16th-century painted polyptych.

The Núcleo de Arte Sacra is located in the Igreja da Misericórdia and is dedicated to the religious and spiritual work of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ferreira do Alentejo since 1516. The church portal draws on the Manueline style and features stone motifs such as pine cones, anthropomorphic figures and cord patterns. The main altarpiece also has a distinctive art-historical connection: António Nogueira of Évora created it around 1570, and it consists of six panels. The Igreja Matriz, also known as Nossa Senhora da Assunção, is mentioned in documents dating back to the 14th century. The Capela do Calvário—also known as Santa Maria Madalena or “Igreja das Pedras”—stands out for its circular floor plan and dome with a lantern.

Local Traditions and Discoveries

The Casa do Vinho e do Cante is housed in the former Taberna do Zé Lelito. It preserves the memory of traditional taverns in the Alentejo, Talha wine and Cante Alentejano. The song “O menino” is especially popular in Peroguarda. Other craft traditions take different forms: blacksmithing is still practised in Ferreira do Alentejo at Armindo Fragoso’s workshop, while the artisanal production of mat baskets continues in the parish of Odivelas. Traditional furniture from Ferreira do Alentejo has a history spanning more than eight decades.

Birdlife and Landscape

For nature watching, the Albufeira de Odivelas is an important gathering place for various waterbirds. At Lagoa dos Patos, which lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Ferreira do Alentejo and Alvito, gatherings of ducks, herons, spoonbills, flamingos, white-cheeked terns, sandpipers and stilts can be seen. The birds you can observe vary by season. The Zona Ribeirinha de Santa Margarida do Sado offers a different perspective on the landscape: this green space provides views of the Sado River landscapes.

The Parque de Lazer da Fonte Nova also combines time outdoors with exercise. It has a picnic area and two fitness circuits for pedestrians, equipped with suitable exercise equipment. The places described therefore range from birdwatching and riverside scenery to a facility for leisure and exercise.

Getting Around and Regional Experiences

The Estrada Nacional 2 connects Chaves and Faro over a distance of 738 kilometres. It is used by cyclists, motorcyclists, tour buses and car drivers. In the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo, the route passes through the towns of Ferreira do Alentejo and Odivelas. A guided tour combining bus travel and walking links the town of Ferreira do Alentejo with the Lagar de Azeite Alentejano Oliveira da Serra and Herdade do Pinheiro. As seasonal operating details may change, it is advisable to check the schedule in advance.

Guided visits to Herdade do Marmelo explain the entire olive oil production process and conclude with a tasting. Check when visits are offered before travelling. This makes it possible to combine an interest in regional production with cultural and scenic discoveries in the municipality, without combining the different offerings into a single excursion.

Annual Events

Recurring events include the Festival Giacometti on the first weekend of June and the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição on 8 December. Various pilgrimages to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição also take place throughout the year. Nossa Senhora da Conceição is venerated there as the patron saint of the town and municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo; the church interior is lined with azulejos. Check the dates and programmes of the events before your trip.
