Cante Alentejano is part of Cuba’s intangible cultural identity. Craftsmanship is also reflected in everyday items: craft shops offer handmade boots and shoes, agricultural tools, leather jackets and slippers. The items available from individual artisans may vary. This is where cultural heritage and practical crafts meet—two distinct sides of the place.

Churches and Architectural History

The Igreja Matriz de Cuba tells the story of a long construction history: it was probably begun in the 16th century, and work continued until the 18th century. This explains its Mannerist and Baroque appearance. The Igreja e Recolhimento do Carmo also dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. These buildings illustrate the span of time covered by sacred architecture in Cuba and its surroundings.

Construction of the Igreja Matriz in Vila Ruiva began in 1523 in the Manueline style. The church is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, or a building of public interest. The frescoes in the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação are considered unique in the municipality of Cuba. The Igreja de São Luís in Faro do Alentejo also preserves frescoes. They date from the 17th century and are located on the side walls and the triumphal arch.

Museums, Houses and Frescoes

Casa Fialho de Almeida is a literary museum dedicated to the life and work of Fialho de Almeida. He lived in the house for 18 years; it is classified as a monument of public interest. Its three sections focus on his personal and professional life, as well as rural life and ethnography. Casa-Museu Quinta da Esperança adds to this picture of historic houses: it is a manor house dating from the late 16th century.

The Tesouro da Igreja Matriz de S. Vicente was established in 2003. Its collection includes archaeological objects, paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths’ work, textiles and decorative art. In Vila Alva, the Museum of Sacred Art and Archaeology is next to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Visitação, which dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum collection spans objects from prehistoric, Roman and medieval times. It also includes votive offerings and banners from the Endoenças procession. Check museum access separately.

The Eco Palacete Borralho RelĂłgio dates from the 19th century and has more than 140 years of history. Guided visits are available by prior appointment; confirm the arrangements again before travelling. The Rota do Fresco connects Cuba with Alvito, Portel, Viana and Vidigueira. Along the route, visits take in wall paintings in chapels, hermitages and churches. Access arrangements at individual sites may change, so it is worth checking their respective visiting conditions.

Archaeological evidence also offers insight into how the landscape was used. At the Cuba–Vila Alva–Vila Ruiva road junction, the Represa Romana preserves a massive wall and the remains of a Roman dam used for agricultural purposes. The Ponte Romana is considered a National Monument and formed part of the Roman road between Beja and Évora.

Water, Landscapes and Local Traditions

Praia Fluvial de Albergaria dos Fusos was awarded the Blue Flag for the first time on 16 June 2025. The award recognises the environmental quality, safety and facilities of the bathing area, which opened in 2023. The complex includes two floating pools, sports courts for football, handball and beach volleyball, a restaurant with a panoramic terrace, a nautical centre for environmentally friendly activities and a birdwatching tower. As individual facilities may change, check the current situation before your visit. Water sports, fishing and recreation are other possible activities at the Barragem de Albergaria dos Fusos. Ribeira de Odivelas is also among the places in the municipality for outdoor leisure and sporting activities.

In Vila Alva, centuries-old vineyards and local wine cellars are part of the traditional craft of winemaking. Culinary traditions include new wine, goat’s cheese, cured meats and bread; new wine is especially associated with November. Local taverns are other places to try these specialities. In 2024, the municipal initiative “Provando o Tareco” followed a route through wine cellars in Vila Alva. Visitors could sample Talha wine and petiscos and experience Cante Alentejano. This edition brought together several characteristic themes of the place: winemaking, local cuisine and music.
