Mining has been documented in the Minas de Aljustrel mining district for 5,000 years, albeit with interruptions. The mines are also located in the Alentejo area of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. This long and eventful history, together with the geological setting, gives Aljustrel a distinctive thread of discovery: alongside industrial heritage, there are archaeological traces, religious art and viewpoints from which the mines form part of the landscape.

Discover mining in different ways

The Parque Mineiro de Aljustrel is presented as an industrial tourism attraction combining mining, geology, archaeology, education and culture. If you would like to explore the area on foot, the Percurso Mineiro Urbano offers a route of about 12 kilometres through various mining sights in Vila Aljustrel and its surroundings. The approximate distance is a useful guide when planning this walk into your day.

Another perspective is offered by the themed Rota da Faixa Piritosa Ibérica. Its stops or components in Aljustrel include the Museu Municipal, the Piso 30 mine gallery, Casa dos Compressores and the Algares area. Taken together, these names convey the breadth of the mining heritage: it ranges from museum and underground connections to facilities directly associated with work in the mines.

Technology, archaeology and traces of the past

The NĂşcleo da Central de Compressores is housed in a mining facility built in 1952. It produced compressed air for mining operations. The name Malacate Vipasca also points to a specific technical function: it refers to a mine hoist used to move up and down in extraction shafts. Some of these shafts are more than 300 metres deep. The mine associated with Malacate Vipasca lies near a gossan with traces of Roman mining, including galleries at depths of up to 120 metres.

The Archaeological Museum section explores the development of human settlement in the municipality, with a focus on mining. The Museu Municipal de Aljustrel also preserves archaeological materials from excavations in the region. Cerro da Mangancha offers a glimpse into a different historical period: the fortified settlement dates back to the Late Bronze Age. It is situated on a hilltop, from which the view stretches across the surrounding landscape to the important mines of SĂŁo JoĂŁo do Deserto.

The industrial character of the area is also visible in the landscape from Moinho do Maralhas. South of the mill site, you can see the headframes of the Aljustrel mines, some tanks for acidic water and the mining warehouses. Together with the view from Cerro da Mangancha, these viewpoints offer different perspectives: one foregrounds the visible facilities, while the other opens up across the landscape towards the mines.

Churches, art and feast days

Architecture and religious art come together in close quarters at the Igreja Matriz de Aljustrel. The church has a single nave; two side chapels are dedicated to São Nuno de Santa Maria and Santa Bárbara, respectively. A 17th-century tile panel depicts the Divine Saviour of the World. The Igreja da Misericórdia houses four paintings from the Mannerist school, offering a distinct artistic feature alongside the tiled image in the Matriz.

Religious festivals include celebrations held on different dates and with different programmes. The Festa em Honra de Nossa Senhora das Dores takes place every year on the fourth Sunday of Lent and reaches its climax with a procession. The annual Festividades em Honra de Nossa Senhora do Castelo include musical performances, traditional fairs, sermons, a Eucharistic celebration and a procession. If you would like to attend one of these celebrations, check the date before your trip; the date of the festival in honour of Nossa Senhora das Dores follows the church calendar.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Castelo can be reached via a staircase from Rua de Nossa Senhora do Castelo to the chapel forecourt. The forecourt serves as a viewpoint over the municipality of Aljustrel and neighbouring areas. For initial orientation, the Aljustrel Tourist Office is located in Parque Mineiro de Aljustrel, in Bairro de Santa Bárbara, 7600-020 Aljustrel.
