The mining history of Minas De São Domingos can be seen from different perspectives: Casa do Mineiro focuses on the life of a family, while Corta and Achada do Gamo illustrate open-pit mining and metallurgy. Complexo do Minério adds to these perspectives with an open-air museum about life during the mining era and the extraction and processing of ore. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you are particularly interested in domestic life, industrial development, or also the landscape and water.

A glimpse into the everyday life of a mining family

Casa do Mineiro is the first permanent site of the Mina de São Domingos Museum. Here, the museum recreates the living conditions of a mining family in a 16 m² living space. The specific size of the room gives the subject of domestic life a sense of scale: here, you can explore mining history from the perspective of a family, rather than only through technical processes and landscape features. This gives Casa do Mineiro a different focus from sites associated with ore extraction and processing.

From ore extraction to metallurgy

Corta was created by open-pit mining, which began in 1867. Since the beginning of modern mining activity at Mina de São Domingos, Achada do Gamo has been the center of metallurgical work on the extracted ores. The two sites therefore represent different parts of industrial history: Corta stands for open-pit mining, and Achada do Gamo for work on the ores. If you want to understand industrial change, you can distinguish between their roles rather than treating them as interchangeable evidence of a single activity.

The historical infrastructure also includes a railway line built in the 1860s. It connected São Domingos with Pomarão, the ore-loading port on the Guadiana River. This connection adds the transport of ore to the port to the perspectives on extraction and metallurgy. The region’s mining history goes back further in time: it is said to have begun as early as the Chalcolithic period; mining intensified from the 8th century BC onward, particularly under Roman rule. The industrial history thus encompasses both this early development and the modern-era facilities and connections.

Open-air museum, walking trail and landscape

Complexo do Minério is an open-air museum. It illustrates life during the mining era and various stages of ore extraction and processing. The condition of individual structures may change, so plan your visit according to the circumstances on site. The Mina de São Domingos visitor center is also connected to the Rota da Faixa Piritosa Ibérica, a themed route for mining and geotourism.

A marked walking trail and a geological exhibition are shown on the 2021 tourist map. If you plan to follow the trail, check the conditions on site. There is a car park for private vehicles at the São Domingos visitor center; confirm local parking arrangements. This information helps with orientation without implying anything about current trail conditions or the condition of individual buildings based on map markings alone.

River beach and cultural heritage

Praia Fluvial da Mina de São Domingos is on the Tapada Grande and has been open since June 2000. Its seasonal operating schedule may vary; take this into account when planning a beach visit. The water adds a different emphasis from the industrial history, while offering another way to experience the site.

The cultural history is also connected with the miners: the first Cante Alentejano choir group was formed in 1926 in connection with the workers of Minas de São Domingos. The Minas de São Domingos ensemble, located in the Freguesias of Corte do Pinto, Santana de Cambas and Espírito Santo in the Concelho of Mértola, Beja District, is classified as an ensemble of public interest. The official classification dates to 2013. Together, these different themes provide a guide to your stay: Casa do Mineiro and Cante Alentejano lead to social and cultural history, Corta and Achada do Gamo to mining and metallurgy, and Tapada Grande to the seasonal river beach.
