Terra Cha combines a striking landscape with religious and rural history. The Miradouro das Veredas offers panoramic views of Terra Cha, the Serra de Santa Bárbara mountain range and Monte Brasil. The viewpoint is located on a large rocky outcrop between the island’s interior and the sea.
Church and Architectural History
The Igreja da Nossa Senhora de Belém stands on the site of a chapel that Sebastião Álvares and his wife, Grácia Fernandes, had built in 1570 following a vow to the Virgin of Belém. The foundation stone of the later church was laid in November 1846; it opened for worship in 1857. The main chapel contains a 17th-century Baroque altarpiece. The different dates mark distinct stages: the chapel’s origins, the later construction of the church and the dating of the altarpiece. Those interested in religious architecture can consider these dates separately rather than combining them into a single founding date.
Religious Traditions
Religious traditions are not expressed solely through buildings. Religious festivals are held annually in Terra Cha, and their essential traditions continue to be observed. The Império do Terreiro is considered the oldest Espírito Santo império in Terra Cha and dates back to 1861. Its festivals take place on Pentecost Sunday and Trinity Sunday. In this way, a specific festival calendar is linked to the locally recorded history of this império.
Cattle Raising and Remembrance
The Memorial aos Ganadeiros in Fonte Faneca commemorates cattle breeders associated with Terra Cha. Its mural documents the cattle farms of Virgínio de Barcelos (1926), Patrício de Sousa Linhares (1936) and Ti Cândido das Bicas (1936). The names and dates provide concrete reference points for the area’s agricultural past. Terra Cha’s rural landscape is also shaped by traditional grazing.
Landscape and Views
Terra Cha lies some distance from the sea, near the city and close to forests and inland areas. The landscape includes woodland and the slopes of the Serra de Santa Bárbara. At a mid-altitude, Terra Cha offers views of Pico, São Jorge and Faial. The Serra de Santa Bárbara appears at two scales: as a named mountain range in the panorama, and through its slopes in the surrounding landscape.
Water and Local Products
The water supply is also part of the area’s history. The water for the Chafariz Caminho para Belém and the surrounding houses came from the Nascente da Fonte da Telha in the Freguesia do Posto Santo and flowed through clay pipes. This part of Terra Cha’s history therefore leads to a spring in the neighboring parish. The local heritage passed down through generations also includes chestnut groves of the “Viana” variety. Those primarily interested in architectural history can follow the church’s chronology; those wishing to explore rural heritage will find their own points of interest in the memorial and the traditional Viana chestnut.
