Fonte Do Bastardo offers several distinct themes for a stay: historic religious buildings, a viewpoint associated with windmills, and named leisure and sports facilities. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether cultural history, leisure spots or both match your interests. The sites differ not only in theme, but also in the type of date given for each one.
Church, Império and festive culture
The Church of Fonte Do Bastardo opened to the public in 1904; the Império do Espírito Santo da Fonte do Bastardo was built in 1913. The dates are nine years apart and mark different milestones: the church’s opening and the construction of the Império. This makes it possible to compare the two sites chronologically without treating them as part of the same building phase.
A report from 2013 describes a patron saint’s festival in Fonte Do Bastardo in honour of Santa Bárbara. A Eucharistic celebration was followed by a procession. This sequence gives a clear sense of how the event unfolded and complements the building history with a form of religious celebration. A report dated 25 August 2026 about the Bodo de Leite describes depictions of embroiderers, threshing, female reapers, a slaughter and the grape harvest. These motifs focus on the activities depicted and thus differ from the historic buildings and the procession.
Windmills and leisure facilities
On Serra do Cume, the Junta de Freguesia de Fonte do Bastardo established a viewpoint that recalls the windmills. This gives it a different emphasis from religious history and depictions of celebrations: the focus is on windmills. This offers another way to choose a theme, distinct from the dated buildings and the festival motifs described.
The Jardim Lúdico e Cultural da Fonte do Bastardo has green spaces, a children’s playground and a futsal court. The site therefore brings together specific features related to greenery, play and sport. The municipal sports hall Pavilhão Desportivo da Fonte do Bastardo is named Pavilhão Vitalino Fagundes. The Jardim is therefore a mixed-use leisure spot, while the hall provides a distinct municipal sports connection.
At its inauguration on 26 August 2026, the Fonte Do Bastardo leisure area on Rua do Biscoito was presented with an interpretation centre. The leisure area adds a cultural element to the options, while the Jardim is described as having green spaces, a playground and a futsal court. When choosing according to your interests, the name “leisure” alone is not the deciding factor; the facilities also have different emphases.
Plan your stay around your interests
The viewpoint associated with windmills adds another theme to these options.
