On Pico do Tio Delfina in Raminho stands a fixed stone windmill, from which the view stretches across much of Terceira’s northern coast to the ocean horizon. Together with the cliffs and the history of the Igreja de São Francisco Xavier, the landscape and cultural heritage shape the area.

Coastal Landscape and Elevation

Raminho’s coastline forms a continuous, almost straight stretch of high cliffs over about 5.7 kilometres. Raminho also occupies the northern slope of Caldeira de Santa Bárbara in the Santa Bárbara volcanic complex. The coastline and the location on the volcanic slope thus stand out as distinct geographical features of the area.

The higher part of Raminho lies within the Serra de Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto Natura 2000 site, which is designated as a Site of Community Importance. This protected-area designation applies to the higher part of the area, not to Raminho as a whole.

Church and Religious Tradition

The Igreja de São Francisco Xavier do Raminho is a spacious, three-nave church in the Neo-Romanesque style, with two bell towers. The foundation stone was laid on 16 August 1855; the first service took place on 26 October 1861. The two dates mark different moments in the building’s history: the start of construction and the first service.

Raminho’s main religious festival is celebrated annually on the last Sunday in August in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. If this festival is relevant to your travel plans, check the specific date for the year in question. The history of the Império do Divino Espírito Santo is also linked to a change of location: on 3 February 1880, it was moved from Teatro do Meio to the square.

Stone Windmill and Coastal Views

The fixed stone windmill on Pico do Tio Delfina is elevated. From there, the unobstructed view stretches across much of Terceira’s northern coast to the ocean horizon. The windmill thus provides a specific vantage point over the broad coastal landscape, which is also visible along the roughly 5.7-kilometre stretch of cliffs.

A secondary road leads from Miradouro do Raminho to a former Vigia da Baleia, a former whale-watching lookout. The word “former” is part of the description of this place: it does not mean the Vigia is a currently operating observation station.

Routes in the Surrounding Area

The Grande Rota do Oeste (GR01 TER) crosses the western half of Terceira along a linear route of about 31.2 kilometres. It runs from Reserva Florestal de Recreio da Lagoa das Patas to Reserva Florestal de Recreio da Mata da Serreta. Its second stage passes a picnic area with a whale-watching station and then reaches Miradouro do Raminho. This stage also runs along steep cliffs and through areas where Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) nest. Miradouro is therefore a point on a longer island route, while the stone windmill is a single elevated viewpoint.

The Serreta PRC3TER hiking trail in neighbouring Serreta offers another perspective on Raminho. From the summit of a volcanic cone, you can see Raminho. By comparison, the view from the stone windmill takes in much of the northern coast and the ocean horizon: the two locations offer different perspectives on the landscape.

Library and Video Library

Biblioteca Álamo Oliveira holds about 7,000 books donated by the writer and poet José Henrique Álamo Oliveira. The library also has a video library. Video recordings can be viewed on site in its equipped rooms. Alongside church architecture and religious history, Raminho’s cultural offerings thus include a literary collection and an audiovisual facility.
