Nature Reserve, Volcano and Hiking Trail

A significant part of the Serra de Santa Bárbara massif forms the Serra de Santa Bárbara e dos Mistérios Negros Nature Reserve. The Mistérios Negros hiking trail is part of the Serra de Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto Special Protection Area and the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara e Mistérios Negros geosite within the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark. It begins and ends beside the support center for Gruta do Natal and Lagoa do Negro. Diverse endemic vegetation can be seen along the trail. The Serra belongs to the Santa Bárbara central volcano; its summit features a double caldera formed by two major collapse episodes. Nature-related themes therefore range from the protected area and vegetation along the trail to the geological formation of the summit.

Views and Orientation

On the southern slope, the Centro de Interpretação da Serra de Santa Bárbara is located near the start of the trail leading to the summit. It provides visitors with information for exploring Terceira Natural Park. The Miradouro da Serra de Santa Bárbara viewpoint offers views across a large part of Terceira; from there, you can also see other islands in the central group. The center and viewpoint serve different orientation purposes: one provides information about the natural park, while the other offers views beyond Terceira.

Churches, Monument and Local Tradition

The history of the church can be traced through buildings from different periods. The main church of Santa Bárbara is documented as having existed as early as 1592. In 1834, extension work was carried out on the main church of Santa Bárbara. The Nª Srª da Ajuda Chapel dates from 1877. According to local legend, the stone statue kept there was washed ashore on the coast near this place. The statue is associated with a different kind of account than the buildings’ dates: its origins remain explicitly part of a local legend. There is also a monument at Largo 1º de Janeiro, inaugurated on June 1, 2016.

The Festas de Santa Bárbara

The Festas de Santa Bárbara are a community festival in the civil parish of Santa Bárbara, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira. They include religious celebrations dedicated to the Divine Holy Spirit. They are organized by the Irmandade do Divino Espírito Santo de Santa Bárbara, founded in 1876.
