Malszewo lies on the shore of Lake Małszewskie. Three distinct themes can help you choose this destination: the lake, historic village architecture, and cycling routes of different lengths and layouts. One route is an 11-kilometre loop through Małszewo; a second is 25.5 kilometres long and ends there. When planning, you can therefore decide whether to focus on a loop starting in Jedwabno or a route from Olsztyn to Malszewo.

Historic buildings in the village

The historic inn with a restaurant dates from the 18th or 19th century and is listed in the National Register of Monuments; the register status is as of 30 September 2023. The wooden restaurant complex consists of two adjoining buildings: a restaurant and a stable. It is dated to 1813 or the late 18th century.

The protected houses include numbers 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8, and house numbers 7 and 8 are also wooden houses. The watermill on a stream dates from the second half of the 19th century. Malszewo is therefore home to different architectural forms and several historical dates.

Zamkowa Góra: hillfort and legend

Near Malszewo, on the forest road to Dłużek, lies Zamkowa Góra. The hill is also known as Schlossberg, Duża Góra and Zaklęta Góra, and was the site of a Prussian hillfort. According to local tradition, a castle sank there during a siege, along with the castle lord’s daughter. Here, a historical landmark stands alongside a legend explicitly identified as local tradition.

Two cycling routes with different layouts

The red, 11-kilometre cycling route runs from Jedwabno via Lipniki, Małszewo and Burdąg, then back to Jedwabno. It passes through Malszewo and is considered somewhat challenging because of its length and varied surfaces. A second red route is 25.5 kilometres long and runs from Olsztyn via Szczęsne, Klewki, Kaborno, Nowa Wieś, Kopanki and Łajs to Małszewo. Check the current signage for this route locally.

The two routes differ in more than just length: the shorter one is a loop returning to Jedwabno, while the longer one starts in Olsztyn and ends in Malszewo. When planning, both the distance and the route layout matter. The 11-kilometre distance alone does not mean an easy ride, since it is specifically the length and changing surfaces that make it somewhat challenging.

Lakeshore and village beach

Jedwabno municipality also counts Lake Małszewskie among its attractive and interesting lakes. Its connection to Malszewo is direct: the village lies right on the lakeshore. At a picnic on the village beach on 27 August 2024, activities included ball games, badminton, walks, water games and exercises on an outdoor fitness trail. If you plan to visit the village beach, check the current conditions before you go.

When planning an overnight stay, you can consider whether the lakeshore, architectural history or cycling will shape your stay the most. These themes offer different reasons to choose the destination: a waterside location, dated buildings, local tradition, and cycling routes with two distinct layouts.
