Trelkówko brings together church architecture and memorial sites with a broader route connection. The church dating from 1757, the book monument to those killed in the First World War, a former Protestant cemetery and a Baptist chapel that is no longer in use form the historical theme. The “Ewita” horse-riding trail passes through Trelkowo and names many other places.
Church and Memorial Sites
The church dates from 1757. It is surrounded by a stone wall and has a tower and two extensions. The year of construction and the architectural features provide two different ways of understanding it: the date places the building in time, while the wall, tower and extensions give a concrete sense of its design. Together, they provide a clear impression of both the age of the church building and its architectural layout.
Next to the church stands a monument in the form of an open book. It commemorates parish and village residents who were killed in the First World War. There is also a pastor’s grave with a cast-iron cross near the church porch. The two memorials differ in what they commemorate: the monument is dedicated to a group of people killed in the war, while the grave marks a single pastor. In this way, collective remembrance and the memory of an individual stand side by side.
Another period of construction is represented by the Baptist chapel: it dates from 1928–1929 and is currently not in use. It was built considerably later than the church dating from 1757; the two dates show the span of time between religious buildings in Trelkówko. A former Protestant cemetery adds another aspect to the village’s history. Gravestones and monuments have been preserved there. As a burial place, the cemetery is a distinct point of interest alongside the church and chapel.
The “Ewita” Horse-Riding Trail
The “Ewita” horse-riding trail passes through Trelkowo. Its route runs through Sasek Mały, Szymanki, Ciemna Dąbrowa, Piecuchy, Wały, Gawrzyjałki, Wyżegi, Jerominy, Chochół, Świętajno, Marksoby, Orżyny, Jabłonka, Trelkowo, Kobylocha, Piece, Sawica, Witówko and Sasek.
Within this sequence, Trelkowo comes after Jabłonka and before Kobylocha. This makes it possible to place the village within the route without equating the route with the local memorial sites. The historical features answer a different question from the order of places along the trail: the church, monument, pastor’s grave, chapel and cemetery offer insights into the history of buildings and remembrance; “Ewita” takes you beyond the boundaries of the individual village.
This gives you two different priorities to consider when planning your trip. If you are interested in architectural history and memorial sites, the church, book monument, pastor’s grave and cemetery are the main points of interest. If you want to understand the horse-riding trail, the sequence of named places helps you locate Trelkowo along the route. This allows you to consider the village’s cultural connections and the route as different aspects of Trelkówko.
