The San River runs through Sanok from south to north in a band of valleys formed during the Ice Age, the Doły Jasielsko-Krośnieńsko-Sanockie. The city lies in two mesoregions: the Sanok-Turcza Mountains and the Bukowsko Foothills. Together with the second mesoregion, these foothills shape Sanok’s varied topography. When planning a trip, culture, landscape and longer routes can therefore be considered side by side—without having to turn them into a single itinerary.

Icon Art and Local Cuisine

The Historical Museum in Sanok displays a collection of 700 icons as well as other works of religious art. Those interested in crafts can also find workshops there based on patterns from the collection of Pokuttya ceramics. Check in advance whether a workshop date is available.

In the open-air museum, the tavern is housed in a historic granary dating from 1732. Regional dishes include wholemeal pierogi and hryczaniki. If you plan to visit the tavern, check its current opening hours before you go.

Compare Hiking Trails by Distance and Time

The Icon Trail is about 70 kilometres long and links 14 churches in the area around Sanok. The Sanok–Chryszczata hiking trail covers 40 kilometres and takes approximately ten hours. This distinction is useful when comparing how to plan your time: the Icon Trail lists its distance and number of churches, while the route to Chryszczata also gives an approximate duration.

Another route from Sanok to Przemyśl is 72 kilometres long and leads through the Słonne Mountains and the Przemyśl Foothills. For cycling and car trips, Powiat sanocki also describes an option that runs from Sanok via Mrzygłód, Dobra, Łodzina, Ulucz, Tyrawa Solna, Siemuszowa, Hołuczków, Tyrawa Wołoska, Słony Wierch, Załuż and Międzybrodzie, before returning to Sanok. This option can thus be distinguished from the hiking trails mentioned above without treating their distances or time estimates as equivalent.

More Places in Powiat Sanocki

In the wider travel area of Powiat sanocki, Mrzygłód has a historic architectural market square, considered one of the region’s most interesting sights. In Tyrawa Solna stands a wooden Greek Catholic parish church built in 1837 and dedicated to St John the Baptist. It is built using log construction and has a post-supported tower. Historically, the village was also known for extracting salt from brine and for komięgi, which were used to transport salt along the San River.

The church complex in Dobra includes a 17th-century church whose tower now serves as a gate and bell tower. The former Greek Catholic Church of St Nicholas in Dobra features figurative polychrome decoration executed by Antoni and Michał Bogdański between 1899 and 1904. In Międzybrodzie, a brick Greek Catholic parish church stands on the tourist Icon Trail.

The natural attractions of Powiat sanocki also offer a variety of experiences: Słonne Mountains Landscape Park is one of three landscape parks in the county. The Polanki Nature Reserve near Bykowce protects natural forest communities of the Carpathian beech forest. Near Duszatyn in the municipality of Komańcza, the Zwiezło Nature Reserve protects two mountain lakes formed by a landslide on the slopes of Chryszczata.

Plan for Swimming and Getting There

The CRiS swimming complex in Sanok has pools that can be used year-round, seasonal outdoor pools and a rehabilitation area. If you plan to use these facilities during your stay, check their current operating status in advance.

On the Polish side, the Sanok–Humenne railway line runs through Powiat sanocki along the Osława Valley, passing through the municipalities of Zagórz and Komańcza. If you are considering travelling by train, check current passenger services separately.
