Mrzygłód is a former small town in the San Valley, on the edge of the Góry Czarne. The market square, churches and crafts preserve different chapters of the town’s history; at the same time, the blue-marked Szlak Ikon hiking trail passes through the town. If you are weighing up cultural traces and a specific hiking option for your trip, you will find both as clearly defined highlights here. This can help you decide whether architectural history or hiking better suits your travel plans.
Market Square and Architectural History
The market square has a historic architectural ensemble. The houses along the market front were built after the fire of 1893. The smithy, at house no. 12, also stands on the market square; it was built in block construction towards the end of the 19th century and is connected to an outbuilding. Block construction is a technique using layers of wood stacked on top of one another. This distinguishes the smithy’s construction from the masonry Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The fire of 1893 provides the historical context for the houses along the market front, while the smithy dates from the end of the 19th century.
Churches from Different Periods
The Parish Church of the Sending of the Apostles has an older history: it was built in the 15th century, probably in 1424, and destroyed by Tatars in 1624. The masonry Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is a different building; it was built in 1901 and is now a ruin. The two churches represent two different building periods: the medieval parish church and a masonry place of worship from the early 20th century, which is now a ruin. If you plan to visit the ruin, check its condition on site.
Crafts and the Mill
In the 17th century, Mrzygłód was known for its pottery. The pottery tradition continued until the middle of the 20th century and has since disappeared. A watermill was built in the hamlet of Juhnie around 1900 using block construction; it was connected to an outbuilding and remained in operation until 1950. Along with the smithy, the mill is a second example of block construction, here used for a different type of building.
Hiking as Another Highlight
The blue-marked Szlak Ikon hiking trail passes through Mrzygłód. This gives you a specific hiking option to consider alongside the town’s history when planning your trip. If you include the trail in your plans, check the trail conditions on site before setting out. At a Nordic walking event on the Hłomcza–Mrzygłód route, the finish was in the market square, where participants could rest and have a meal.
The market square brings architectural history together in one place; the two churches point to different periods, while the Szlak Ikon provides a hiking option.
