Wola Michowa offers two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: historical memorial sites and a yellow-marked hiking trail to Balnica. The historical landmarks include the Jewish and Greek Catholic cemeteries, as well as the former site of a Greek Catholic church. The trail leads to the former Balnica–Osadne border crossing, which no longer functions as a border crossing. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wola Michowa, you can first consider whether local history or hiking will be the main focus of your stay.

Memorial sites with different associations

In January 2019, a stone with a commemorative plaque was erected in the Jewish cemetery in memory of about 150 Jewish people murdered there. In July 2019, plaques bearing the names of Jewish people from Wola Michowa and the surrounding area, along with an information plaque about the cemetery’s history, were also unveiled there. In this way, remembrance of those murdered, the names of Jewish people from the village and its surroundings, and the history of the cemetery stand alongside one another as distinct aspects.

At the entrance to the Greek Catholic cemetery stands a memorial stone with a plaque honouring the residents of Wola Michowa of various nationalities who are buried there. The focus of this memorial therefore differs from that of the Jewish cemetery: here, residents of various nationalities who were buried there are honoured. To understand the local history, it is helpful to distinguish between these dedications rather than treating the cemeteries as a single memorial site.

The former church site

A brick Greek Catholic church dating from 1843 once stood at the former church site in Wola Michowa. The church no longer exists. The landmark is therefore the former church building, not a structure that still stands today. The dates also highlight different events: 1843 refers to the construction of the church, while the plaques at the Jewish cemetery were unveiled in 2019.

Wola Michowa is also home to the “Kija chata” mountain tourism centre.

Hiking trail to Balnica

The yellow-marked hiking trail starts in Wola Michowa and leads to Balnica, to the former Balnica–Osadne border crossing. Since the accession to the Schengen Area, it has no longer functioned as a border crossing. Balnica–Osadne is therefore a historical destination; the trail does not lead to a border crossing that is still in operation. This distinction is important when considering the hiking destination.

Your trip can therefore focus on different things: the cemeteries and former church site lead to distinct aspects of local history, while the yellow-marked trail offers a hiking focus. The “Kija chata” mountain tourism centre is another connection to mountain tourism in Wola Michowa. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay the most.
