Sanok can be explored through three distinct highlights: the Ethnographic Park of the open-air museum, the Historical Museum in the castle, and hiking trails that pass through cultural sites or lead into the wider surrounding area. The open-air museum focuses on historic building ensembles and recreated establishments; the castle museum brings its collection objects into focus. The routes described have clearly different courses: the blue Szlak Ikon passes through several cultural sites in Sanok, while PTTK routes run from the main railway station toward Orli Kamień, Sanok-Biała Góra or Przemyśl. When planning, you can first decide whether your interest lies in historic ensembles, museum collections or a hiking route.
Open-air museum: market architecture and themed areas
The Ethnographic Park of the open-air museum contains more than 150 objects. One dedicated area focuses on the history of the oil industry. Another displays a recreated Galician small-town market from the turn of the 20th century. Wooden houses stand around a spacious market square; their interiors feature craft workshops, an inn, a municipal office, a post office and other establishments. The market scene thus presents more than a series of individual buildings: the layout of the square, the houses and their depicted uses together form an image of a small-town market. The park also features a manor farm from the village of Święcany.
The Historical Museum in the castle
The Historical Museum, founded in 1934, is located in Sanok Castle. Its collections include icons and works by Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. Its collection focus differs from the architectural displays at the open-air museum: in Sanok, artworks in the castle and reconstructed houses with their depicted interiors represent distinct cultural highlights.
Hiking trails with different routes
The blue Szlak Ikon, marked as a hiking trail, runs from Sanok past the Historical Museum, the Orthodox cathedral and the Museum of Folk Architecture. Its route description thus names several cultural sites in Sanok. A PTTK hiking trail runs from Sanok Main Railway Station via the Słonne Mountains and the Przemyśl Foothills to Przemyśl. In the area around Sanok, it also provides access to Orli Kamień. The route over the named mountain ranges and its destination of Przemyśl are presented alongside a point of interest in the Sanok area.
Another PTTK connecting trail runs from Sanok Main Railway Station to the red hiking trail at Orli Kamień. Together with the red trail section from Orli Kamień to Sanok-Biała Góra, it forms a hiking route. Unlike the route toward Przemyśl, this connection is specifically described as following the red section to Sanok-Biała Góra. The named destinations help with comparison: Przemyśl on one route, Sanok-Biała Góra on the other. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
