The TAZ workers’ settlement in Zawiercie adds a distinctive historical touch. It was built between 1880 and 1910 and is listed as a unique monument with the Provincial Monuments Conservator in Katowice under number 1428/91. Zawiercie County lies in southern Poland, in the northeastern part of the Silesian Voivodeship and in the heart of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura, also known as the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. In Podzamcze are the ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle, a 14th-century fortification on the Trail of the Eagles’ Nests (Szlak Orlich Gniazd). Here, you can discover a workers’ settlement and medieval defensive architecture as two distinct historical aspects of the region.

Castles and Trails

The red-marked Trail of the Eagles’ Nests and the blue-marked Trail of the Jura Castles (Szlak Warowni Jurajskich) pass by the ruins of Bąkowiec Castle in Skarżyce. The colors provide a clear reference point if you want to tell the two routes apart. As markings can change locally, check them before setting out. In the Smoleń Nature Reserve, the landscape includes the ruins of a 14th-century castle with a surviving Gothic entrance gate. Visitors can access a hiking trail and areas within the ruins: the eastern and western outer wards, the upper castle and the castle tower. Check the current access rules before your visit, as local regulations may change.

Explore, Collect and Taste

SOWA, a small science center in the railway station building at 4 3 Maja Street in Zawiercie, offers a different way to explore. Visitors can independently investigate phenomena at research stations, change parameters, make observations and experiment. Hands-on exploration is the focus. The Municipal Museum Room has been part of the Municipal and County Library since April 30, 1997. It collects, preserves and displays memorabilia from the Zawiercie region. The Szymański Palace houses the Museum Room and a branch of the Social Music Centers in the attic, the city library on the ground floor and a private restaurant in the basement. If you want to visit a specific area, check current visiting arrangements.

A regional dish is another subject to explore: at the “Pod Berkową Górą” educational farm in Podlesice, a two- to three-hour course teaches participants how to make the traditional potato dish “kluchy połom bite.” The course’s length makes it easy to plan as a standalone activity. Zawiercie also has a salt cave, or saline mist tower, on the grounds of the Sports and Recreation Center on Moniuszki Street. If you want to visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Activities in Different Seasons

In Zawiercie County, climbing is popular from spring to autumn, especially in Podlesice, Rzędkowice, Podzamcze and Ryczów. Restrictions may vary by climbing area; check the current conditions on site. In winter, ski slopes in Morsko are available, and cross-country skiing is possible around Podlesice. This gives you a clear seasonal distinction: climbing is associated with the warmer months, while downhill and cross-country skiing are mentioned for winter.

Zawiercie is an important rail and road transport hub for the county. The first route of the Three Rivers Trail (Szlak 3 Rzek) starts at Zawiercie railway station and runs through Blanowice, Kromołów and Bzów. Check local route conditions before setting out. Bzów lies along this route; there is also a source of the Czarna Przemsza behind the community center. The place name therefore connects a specific point on the trail with another local feature.
