Zawiercie lies on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, on the Warta River. The springs of three rivers give the Szlak 3 Rzek its specific focus; at the same time, its first variant starts at the railway station, providing a clear reference point for planning. Direct rail connections in several directions are another practical consideration. In the city, interactive science, a museum collection and traces of industrial history complete the picture.
River Springs and Routes in Zawiercie
The Szlak 3 Rzek hiking trail leads to the sources of the Warta, the Czarna Przemsza and the Blanówka in Zawiercie. One of the Warta’s main springs lies in the Kromołów district, beneath the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk. The Czarna Przemsza rises in the Bzów district. Thus, two named river sources in different districts sit alongside the trail’s broader theme: waterways and their origins.
The first variant of the Szlak 3 Rzek starts at Zawiercie railway station and runs through Blanowice, Kromołów and Bzów. This is a specific reference point if you would like to factor a hike into your arrival plans. Hiking and cycling routes also intersect in Zawiercie, including the red-marked Szlak Orlich Gniazd and the Szlak Warowni Jurajskich. If you are looking for a specific hiking destination, you can use the Three Rivers Trail as a guide; the intersecting cycling and hiking routes are also relevant if you are interested in a wider range of routes.
Direct rail connections run north, including to Warsaw and Gdynia. Southbound connections include Kraków, Zakopane, Prague, Budapest and Vienna. Upper and Lower Silesia, as well as eastern destinations such as Ełk and Suwałki, are also directly connected. Check the timetable for your travel dates if you are planning to use these connections.
Hands-on Science
The Małe Centrum Nauki SOWA is located in the Zawiercie railway station building, at ul. 3 Maja 4. Visitors can explore, discover and experiment independently. At the research stations, they can trigger phenomena, change parameters, and make and verify observations. The exhibits may be touched; in the Majsternia, visitors take on construction challenges. The experience is therefore based on trying things out for yourself, rather than simply looking at exhibits. The address and hands-on format give you specific points of reference if you would like to include science in your travel plans.
City History and Exhibition Venues
The Miejska Izba Muzealna collects, preserves and displays objects of remembrance from the Zawiercie region. The Galeria MOK is a two-storey exhibition space divided into a white and a black area. The Kromołów district is also home to a medieval market square, recommended as a point of interest along a local route.
The TAZ workers’ housing estate, which is listed in the register of monuments, is a testament to industrial history. Its plans included not only apartment blocks for workers, but also public buildings: a school, a hospital, a doctors’ building with a consulting room, a laundry, bathhouses and a bakery. The plans thus covered both housing and public facilities; the buildings listed were planned.
The ruins of Bąkowiec Castle in Skarżyce also combine a historic site with route guidance: the red-marked Szlak Orlich Gniazd and the blue-marked Szlak Warowni Jurajskich run alongside them. This gives you the opportunity to weigh up different interests when choosing what to focus on, from river springs, hiking and cycling routes, and interactive science to city history.
