The parish church of St Wenceslas, an 18th-century garden monument and an August festival offer different ways to explore the cultural history of Irządze. A lime tree around 500 years old adds a natural monument to the town’s history. Nature planning comes with a clear boundary: the Kępina nature reserve is located in the municipality and is not open to visitors.
The parish church and its building history
The parish church of St Wenceslas was built around 1326. In 1390, Stefan Świętopełk of Zawada had it remodelled with the LIS coat of arms. It was burned down by the Swedes in 1657; reconstruction followed towards the end of the 17th century. In the process, the building lost some of its earlier character and splendour. This sequence encompasses construction, remodelling, destruction and reconstruction; it shows that the church’s history did not end with its original year of construction.
The Gothic presbytery dates from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. A presbytery is the chancel and altar area of a church. This dating adds a specifically identified part of the building to its history; it should be distinguished from the dates of the church’s construction and later reconstruction. For a cultural-historical perspective, both the chronology and the architectural classification are therefore relevant.
Garden art and natural monument
The park in Irządze is a valuable 18th-century garden monument. Its Baroque garden is laid out in the Italian style with French features. The grounds thus combine two different design influences in a single garden, giving it a cultural-historical emphasis distinct from that of the parish church, whose history spans several phases.
A small-leaved lime tree stands by the manor house in Irządze. It is around 500 years old and designated a natural monument. Its trunk circumference is given as 750 cm; this figure may change over time. The age and trunk circumference describe different characteristics of the tree, while its designation records its status as a natural monument.
Kępina: nature conservation in the municipality
The Kępina nature reserve lies in the southeastern part of the municipality of Irządze, within the Pradła forests. It encompasses the headwater section of the Rajecznica and its smaller tributaries. Established in 2005, the reserve covers 89.6 hectares and protects natural plant communities for scientific, natural-history and educational reasons. Its water features therefore include both the headwater section and smaller tributaries; the plant communities form another part of what is protected.
Kępina is not open to visitors; entry is prohibited. Check the current notices before planning a trip, and do not include the area as an excursion destination.
Harvest Festival and Currant Festival in August
Every year in August, Irządze holds its municipal harvest festival (Dożynki) together with the Currant Festival. Unlike the church and garden history, the festival is tied to a particular season. If you plan to travel for the celebration, check the date of that year’s event in advance so you can coordinate your accommodation with the specific event day.
