In Sianowo, significant devotion to the Virgin Mary meets practical opportunities for cycling. The Madonna figure in the church and the pilgrimage tradition give the place a distinct cultural identity, while two different cycling route descriptions offer flexibility when planning. You can focus your stay on visiting the shrine or include cycling as another key activity.

The Madonna Figure and Pilgrimage in Sianowo

The church in Sianowo houses a Madonna figure dating from the 15th century. In 1966, it was crowned Queen of Kashubia. The figure continues to be venerated by Kashubian residents and by numerous pilgrims from Poland and abroad. Devotion to the Virgin Mary is therefore not only part of the town’s history but also shapes its religious significance to this day.

A document from 1480 granted all the faithful a special indulgence for making a pilgrimage to Sianowo to see the “Łaskawa Figura.” This historical connection leads directly to today’s Shrine of Our Lady, Queen of Kashubia. For visitors interested in religious heritage, Sianowo brings together a specific place of veneration and a pilgrimage tradition stretching back centuries.

Cycling Routes: Distance and Time Required Differ

The green cycling route runs from Kartuzy via Łapalice, Lake Białe and Pomieczyńska Huta to Sianowo and is 26.5 kilometres long. The estimated cycling time for this route is about two hours and 40 minutes. This is a guideline, not a fixed duration: conditions along the way and your individual pace affect the actual journey time.

Another description refers to the 4.8-kilometre Sianowo–Garcz cycling route section in the Kashubian Landscape Park. Its main attractions include the shrine church, built in 1816, and Lake Sianowskie. The descriptions give different route lengths and should therefore not be combined into a single tour. To decide, you can first consider whether the longer route from Kartuzy or the shorter Sianowo–Garcz section better suits your plans.

Services and Dates

Every Wednesday, a novena to Our Lady of Sianowo is held at the shrine as part of Holy Mass. Every Thursday, after Mass, there is adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these services, check the current times before travelling.

On 20 July 2025, the Great Indulgence was celebrated at the Shrine of the Queen of Kashubia, in conjunction with the veneration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Plans

When looking for a hotel in Sianowo, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: is visiting the shrine your priority, or would you like to include Sianowo in a cycling tour? Compare specific offers based on their location and whether the details suit your plans. This way, your choice of accommodation reflects the visits and routes you actually intend to take.

A Distinct Cultural Theme in the Wider Destination of Karthaus

In the wider destination of Karthaus, Kartuzy offers a distinct perspective on regional history. Its Gothic collegiate church dates from the 14th century, is one of Pomerania’s most valuable architectural monuments and is considered unique nationwide. Its distinctive Baroque roof, shaped like a coffin lid, symbolises the monastic ideal of the Carthusian Order and the motto “memento mori.”

Also in Kartuzy, the Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum presents literature, material culture, language, and regional history and traditions. Its exhibits are spread across eight exhibition rooms in the main building. They include Bazyli’s forge, the exhibition “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” and temporary exhibitions. This cultural offering belongs to the wider destination of Karthaus; it is a separate theme from the pilgrimage site of Sianowo.
