Długi Kierz reveals itself through specific trail details and a layered local history. Marked trails pass through sections with different surfaces and cross a former railway track that is now barely recognizable. There is also the long history of a brickworks and an origin story about strawberries. These topics offer different perspectives on the place: outdoor activity, work in the past, and a story passed down in the village.

Hiking Trails and Historic Traces

On a marked trail to Długi Kierz, one section runs slightly uphill for about 700 meters along a paved road. The trail then turns north onto a dirt track. The description thus specifies both the approximate length of this section and the change from pavement to dirt track, as well as the direction it continues in.

A section of trail beyond Długi Kierz runs between fields, small patches of woodland, and scattered farmsteads. This sequence gives the landscape a varied, small-scale character: open areas alongside small wooded patches and individual farmsteads.

Near Długi Kierz, the marked Wzgórz Szymbarskich trail crosses several times the barely recognizable track bed of a former industrial railway. The railway was once used to transport stone. The trail thus brings together a marked hiking route and a trace of former stone transport; the track bed is now barely recognizable.

Landscape and Protected Areas

The area boundaries distinguish between the landscape park and its buffer zone. The northern and southeastern parts of Długi Kierz lie within the “Kaszubski Park Krajobrazowy”; the rest of the area lies in its buffer zone. A section of the “Doliny Łeby w KPK” nature and landscape protection complex is also located east of Długi Kierz, near the border with the municipality of Chmielno.

If you need to determine the legal status of protected-area boundaries precisely, check the current legal map. The different area designations are also useful for geographical orientation: they show that the landscape park does not cover all of Długi Kierz and that, to the east, part of the named protected-area complex is located there as well.

The History of the Brickworks

A brickworks operated in Długi Kierz throughout the interwar period and continued operating after the Second World War until the 1980s. It employed several dozen people and was, for a time, the largest industrial enterprise in what is now the municipality of Sierakowice. Its long operating history thus spans several decades and places the brickworks within a broader regional context.

The timeline is important: this was a former business, not a current industrial facility. Its past significance is clear from the number of people it employed and its position, for a time, as the largest industrial enterprise in the present-day municipality. This is a different chapter in the local history from the hiking trails, whose descriptions focus primarily on the surface, direction, and landscape along individual sections.

Driving Route and Strawberry Story

Established in 2024, the unsigned driving route “Szlak Truskawek Kaszubskich” follows a side section from Miechucino through Długi Kierz to Wygoda Łączyńska. As this section is not signposted, it is best to check its route before setting out. This offers a different planning option from the marked hiking trails: it is intended for travel by car, but is not signposted on site.

A commonly told origin story about strawberry growing in Długi Kierz concerns Helena Gruchałowa, a housewife from the village. According to the version most often cited, she introduced strawberry cultivation in the early 1920s. She moved neglected plants from a neighbor’s garden into her own, initially assuming they were wild strawberries. It later turned out that they were strawberries; after a few years, she had grown substantial fruit from them. The story unfolds in several stages—from the plants in the neighbor’s garden, through the initial misidentification, to the fruit they later produced.

Different perspectives on time and travel thus sit side by side in Długi Kierz: the strawberry story reaches back to the early 1920s, while the driving route was established in 2024. The hiking descriptions draw attention to specific sections and a former transport route. Depending on whether you are more interested in hiking trails, local history, or the driving route, these topics offer different starting points for exploring Długi Kierz.
