Cycling and local history offer two different ways to explore Wisznice: the four cycling routes can be distinguished by their itineraries, while the historic cemetery and the story of a former Greek Catholic church offer insights into the area’s past. When planning, it is worth considering each route’s length and endpoint, as well as the topics that interest you locally.

Cycling routes by distance and itinerary

The red cycling route is 24.9 kilometers long and runs from Wisznice via Dubica and Polubicze, then through Dubica again, back to Wisznice. The blue cycling route is also 24.9 kilometers long; it runs from Wisznice via Wygoda, Horodyszcze, Łyniew, and Dołholiska before returning. Both routes start and end in Wisznice, but take in the towns in a different order. The same distance does not mean the same itinerary: when choosing, what matters is which of the two sequences of stops you prefer.

The green cycling route is 18.2 kilometers long and runs via Curyn, Rowiny, Curyn, and Zacisze to Wisznice Kolonia. It is therefore 6.7 kilometers shorter than the red and blue routes; its endpoint also differs from their return to Wisznice. Before setting out on this route, it is a good idea to check the local signposting.

Another option is the “Following in the Footsteps of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski” cycling route. It runs from Wisznice via Rozwadówka, Motwica, Czeputka, Romanów, Sosnówka, Sapiehów, and Żeszczynka, before returning to Wisznice. Its itinerary offers a distinct sequence of place names and bears the name of writer Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, whose family also features in the history of the Wisznice cemetery.

The cemetery and family history

The historic cemetery in Wisznice was established around 1800 for the Uniate and Catholic parishes. Members of the family of writer Józef Ignacy Kraszewski are buried there: his grandparents Anna and Błażej Malscy, his mother Zofia z Malskich Kraszewska, and his brothers Lucjan and Kajetan Kraszewscy. The cemetery is considered a unique sacred structure of great artistic value. The names make the family’s connection to local history tangible and give the Kraszewski name on the cycling route another historical association.

A wooden chapel once stood in the cemetery. In the mid-19th century, it was to be replaced by a brick chapel, but the planned building was never completed. The site’s history thus includes both the establishment of the cemetery around 1800 and a later, unrealized plan for a new building. These two facts mark different chapters in the cemetery’s history, without suggesting that the planned building was ever completed.

The former church

The former Greek Catholic church in Wisznice has also undergone a documented change of use: it was renovated in 2009–2010 and converted into a Christian Cultural Center. The church’s more recent conversion thus complements the older history of the cemetery and its chapel. Visitors interested in Wisznice will find several historical themes here: the origins and burial history of a well-known family, the cemetery’s sacred significance, and the conversion of the former church. This local history is a distinct focus for travel planning alongside the cycling routes.
