A former castle with a star-shaped layout, historic townhouses and an extensive icon collection offer several concrete ways to explore the history and culture of Biała Podlaska. The topics range from fortification architecture and the history of education to religious architecture, art and ethnography. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these different focuses and choosing according to what interests you most.

Historic Buildings and the Cityscape

The Zespół Zamkowy Radziwiłłów is the remains of a former castle. Its layout was designed as a five-pointed star; five bastions were surrounded by ditches and earthen ramparts. This describes not just a single building, but an integrated form of fortification. By contrast, the townhouses on Plac Wolności are notable not for a star-shaped layout, but for the design of a historic square.

The building of the former Akademia Bialska on ulica Warszawska features an eagle and the year 1628. The date marks the year the school was founded, not the year the building was constructed. This detail points to the city’s educational history and adds another historical perspective to its buildings.

The Basilian monastery complex dates from the 18th century. It comprises the church pw. Narodzenia NMP, a monastery, and a gate with an enclosure. These elements highlight the difference between a single religious building and a monastery complex: the church, monastery and structurally enclosed entrance together make up the site described. Together with the former castle, the complex represents a different form of historic architecture.

Plac Wolności was the city’s former market square and is lined with townhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Here, the historic impression comes from the interplay between the square and the surrounding residential architecture. The townhouses root the cityscape in two centuries, while the former market square provides its own urban focal point. This sets the site apart from both the castle’s fortifications and the Basilian monastery complex.

Museum and Icon Collection

In 2020, newly designed permanent exhibitions on city history, archaeology, art and ethnography opened to visitors at the Muzeum Południowego Podlasia. The six-storey entrance tower, also known as the watchtower, is now home to the Muzeum Południowego Podlasia. If you are planning a visit, check the current visitor regulations and exhibition offerings before you travel.

The museum owns a collection of almost 1,700 icons, one of the largest in Poland; the collection may change. The first exhibition room of the icon exhibition displays icons depicting Christ and the Mother of God. Works by Bazyli Albiczuk are also on display. As exhibition information may change, it is advisable to check which works are currently on display before your visit.

Cycle Routes as Another Perspective

The city’s cycle routes are also considered a tourist attraction. Routes run near Park Radziwiłłowski and along ulica Zamkowa by Małpi Gaj. This adds another way to explore the city by bike alongside its architectural and museum highlights. If you are planning a route, check the local route details beforehand: the network may change.
