The very long linen beards make the Brodacze tradition a distinctive cultural feature of Slawatycze. Visitors to the town will also find a brick Orthodox church near the market square, a signposted MTB loop starting and finishing there, and, as another travel idea, a catamaran trip on the Bug River to Jabłeczna Monastery. Local customs, architecture and two different ways of getting around offer distinct options for a stay and provide a practical starting point for planning a trip.

The Brodacze: linen beards and a living memory

The name Brodacze refers to the very long beards made from linen fibers that local people wore as part of their costumes. The beard symbolized long life, great experience and a wealth of knowledge gained over time. This symbolism links longevity with knowledge and experience: the beard thus refers not just to age, but also to the wealth of experience that a lifetime encompasses.

The oldest residents of Slawatycze, who were 90 years old at the time, said that their grandparents had told them about the Brodacze. The story lives on as an oral tradition passed down through families, adding a narrative thread handed down by grandparents to the costume’s appearance.

Orthodox architecture near the market square

Near the market square stands a brick Orthodox church in the Byzantine style. It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. Its construction, style and dedication offer different ways to understand the sacred building: the brickwork describes how it was built, the Byzantine style places it architecturally, and the dedication indicates its religious significance.

An MTB loop with specific details

The “Nadbużańskie tajemnice” MTB loop is 25.3 kilometers long and rated for cyclists of intermediate ability. The distance indicates the length of the circuit, while the rating helps you assess it in light of your own experience. The start and finish are at the market square in Slawatycze. The entire route is signposted and follows asphalt roads. It is also coordinated with the Eastern Green Velo cycling route and the Southern Podlachia cycling network. Before setting out, check locally whether the route has changed.

Bike tour or trip on the Bug River?

Another travel idea is a catamaran trip on the Bug River from Slawatycze to Jabłeczna Monastery. For the boat trip, the river and destination are the main points of reference, while the loop can be assessed by its distance, intermediate difficulty, asphalt surface and signage. This gives you a practical choice when planning: a 25.3-kilometer loop on asphalt, or a trip on the Bug River to the monastery. If the catamaran trip is an essential part of your visit, check in advance whether it is available on your chosen date.
