Grabanów combines a history rooted in its manor house with a preserved landscape park and the Klukówka River, which forms a natural boundary with Biała Podlaska. For a stay focused on historic estates and landscapes, the village offers a clear thematic focus.

Manor House History and Historic Buildings

Grabanów was formerly called Grabianów and was owned by the Ilinicz and Kiszk families in the 16th century. In 1522, the village was mentioned as an endowment to St. Anne’s Church in Biała, which had been founded by Jerzy Iwanowicz Ilinicz. This links the village’s early history to a specific date and a named benefactor.

Another point of reference is the year 1714, when the manor house in Grabanów was expanded and a pheasantry was established. Both were arranged in a unified Baroque composition. The focus is therefore not only on individual buildings, but also on the relationship between the manor house and pheasantry within this historic estate.

The outbuildings reflect different construction periods and materials. Near the manor house stands a wooden Czworak building dating from the second half of the 19th century. West of the manor house are two brick outbuildings from the 1920s and 1930s: a stable and a carriage house. Timber construction and masonry stand alongside different building periods here.

A monument in Grabanów Park commemorates participants in the Bar Confederation and the Kościuszko, November, January and Warsaw Uprisings, as well as those involved in the Second World War. It adds a distinct feature alongside the manor house’s architectural traces.

Landscape Park with Preserved and Indistinct Features

The landscape park has been preserved and probably dates from after 1860. Its paths follow axial and radial lines, but in some places are now only faintly visible. The layout thus follows several directions, although the paths are not clearly discernible everywhere.

A long access avenue once ran along an embankment between ponds. This should be distinguished from the park’s preserved features: an oval forecourt and a clearly identifiable garden area, closed off by a semicircular boundary, southeast of the manor house. Rows of hornbeams and ash trees frame this garden area.

To understand the park, it is helpful to distinguish between its former layout and its preserved features: the access avenue belongs to the earlier estate, while the forecourt and garden area are described as preserved or clearly identifiable. The paths, meanwhile, are clearly visible only in some places.

The Klukówka and a Route through Grabanów

The 32-kilometre-long Klukówka River forms a natural boundary between Biała Podlaska and Grabanów. This geographical feature complements the manor house and park history by highlighting the village’s location in relation to Biała Podlaska.

The Szlak dawnych cerkwi i dworów (Trail of Former Orthodox Churches and Manor Houses) also passes through Grabanów. These are two distinct points of interest to consider when planning your trip: the local manor house and park history, and the connection to this route. If you are considering Grabanów as a place to stay, you can decide which of these interests matters most for your trip.
