Discover Zgierz through its city history and the various ways to explore it: from its protected 1820s urban layout and preserved weavers’ houses to its museum and historical walks. When planning a stay, these attractions offer concrete ways to balance cultural history with other interests.

Weavers’ Houses and the Urban Layout

The Park Kulturowy Miasto Tkaczy was established in 2003 to protect Zgierz’s unique urban layout from the 1820s, the only one of its kind in Europe. About 30 weavers’ houses have been preserved there. Together, the layout and the houses offer two different perspectives: the layout concerns the urban order as a whole, while the weavers’ houses are individual historic buildings within that context.

At the Park Kulturowy Miasto Tkaczy, historic buildings are open to visitors. They house institutions and associations, while also serving as a place of recreation for residents and tourists. In this way, the park combines the protection of the historic townscape with the everyday use of its buildings. A visit is therefore not focused solely on viewing the preserved buildings.

A Museum in Dom pod lwami

The Muzeum Miasta Zgierza is located in Dom pod lwami, a building constructed in 1828 at ul. gen. J. H. Dąbrowskiego 21. The museum’s setting in a historic building gives it a distinctive character: here, the city’s history and a specific 19th-century building come together in one place.

The collection comprises around 5,000 objects from the fields of history, archaeology, ethnography, art and numismatics. They document the past and present of Zgierz and Powiat zgierski. The range of collection areas offers a broader perspective than any one historical period or topic: it includes archaeological and historical holdings as well as ethnographic, artistic and numismatic ones.

City History on Foot

The “Miasto Stuleci” route leads through the oldest part of Zgierz and shows sites connected with important historical events in the city. Allow about three hours to walk the route; this includes a museum visit. This combines a time estimate with a focus on the historic urban area and the events connected with the sites along the way.

The historical walk “Spacer historyczny: Nowa Osada w Zgierzu” is designed differently. It allows you to explore the historic part of the city independently, at a time of your choosing. The two offerings therefore have different focuses: “Miasto Stuleci” has an estimated duration that includes a museum visit, while the walk through Nowa Osada is intended for independent exploration at a time of your choice.

Walking Garden and High Ropes Course

Park Miejski in Zgierz was established in 1826 as a walking garden. If you would also like to include a high ropes course in your plans, Park Miejski im. Tadeusza Kościuszki has a green and a red course. Their stated lengths and difficulty levels clearly distinguish the two options.

The green course is 122.76 metres long, runs about three metres above the ground and is the course described as easiest for children. The red course is 221.20 metres long and is intended for advanced participants. The two courses therefore have different difficulty ratings: the green course is described as the easiest for children, while the red one is for advanced participants. These details help you choose between the courses without reducing their differences to length alone.
