Leźnica Wielka offers two distinctly different starting points for choosing a trip: the architectural and furnishing history of the Church of St James the Apostle, and the western section of the Blue Cycle Route “W Centrum Polski,” which is associated with the village. One topic leads to sacred architecture and dated works of art, while the other follows a series of named places. Cultural interest and cycling can thus be weighed as independent reasons for choosing the destination.

Church of St James: Architecture and Furnishings

The Church of St James the Apostle is a wooden structure on a masonry foundation and was built in the early 18th century. It was renovated and extended in 1882, when a masonry porch and a masonry sacristy were added at the front. The early wooden structure and the later masonry additions can therefore be understood as two distinct building phases. The contrast between the wooden structure, its masonry foundation, and the elements added in 1882 gives the building’s history a concrete architectural context. The church is also listed in the register of monuments. This listing, along with its design and date, is therefore part of its cultural and historical context.

Inside, the Baroque high altar is adorned with sculptures of Saint Adalbert and Saint Stanislaus, who is described as a bishop and martyr. The figures date from the late 17th century, before the church was built in the early 18th century. The building and the figures thus offer different perspectives on time: the date of the furnishings is distinct from the construction date of the building.

The side altars are also Baroque. The left altar contains an 18th-century Rococo crucifix and sculptures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Apostle. The right side altar contains an image of Saint Anthony, also from the 18th century. Thus, a crucifix and sculptures are the focus on the left, while the image of Saint Anthony is the focus on the right. Their shared Baroque style connects the side altars, while their subjects and furnishings set them apart.

The Western Section of the Blue Cycle Route

The western section of the Blue Cycle Route “W Centrum Polski” is associated with Leźnica Wielka as its starting point. The route passes through Krzepocin II, Mniszki, Janków, Zduny, Podłęże, Parski, Łyków, Rogów, Wola Świniecka, Głogowiec, Świnice Warckie, Gusin, Grodzisko, Podgórze, Zbylczyce, Leszno, Byszew, Grabów, Besiekiery, Ostrówek, Aleksandrówek, Stara Sobótka, Odechów, Zagróbki, Drzykozy, Sławoszew and Mazew; it then continues through Kutno County.

These features offer different focal points when choosing a destination. The church brings together interest in building phases, its listing in the register, and sacred artworks; the cycle route represents a series of named places and a route that continues onward. Those who want to focus on cultural history will find a clearly defined local subject in the church. Those who include cycling in their trip planning can consider the western section as a route connecting multiple places. A single historic building and a route with numerous stops thus stand alongside one another as different reasons to visit Leźnica Wielka.
