The Miasto Tkaczy Cultural Park preserves around 30 weavers’ houses within Zgierz’s unique urban layout dating from the 1820s. The houses and the distinctive urban structure bring the history of the area to life in a tangible way: this part of Zgierz is shaped not only by individual buildings, but by an entire historic context.
Weavers’ Houses and Museum History
The weavers’ house is home to the Zgierska Pracownia Tkacka and the exhibition “Dziecięcy świat, zabawki z dawnych lat” (“Children’s World: Toys from Years Gone By”). The cultural park also hosts walks, workshops, exhibitions and local events. Regular educational activities at the weavers’ house are aimed at children and young people from Zgierz. Here, in the same historic setting, visitors can encounter crafts, exhibits and different forms of cultural learning.
Another way to discover the city is to visit the Muzeum Miasta Zgierza, housed in the “Dom pod lwami” (“House Under the Lions”). The building was constructed in 1828. The museum preserves around 5,000 objects relating to the history and present-day life of the city and the Zgierz County. The collection covers history, archaeology, ethnography, art and numismatics. If you want to get to know Zgierz beyond its weavers’ houses, you can also explore other topics and the history of the surrounding county here.
Cityscape, Architecture and Remembrance
St. Catherine’s Church is another of Zgierz’s notable historic buildings. The Neo-Gothic church was built between 1910 and 1920 to a design by engineer S. Lemene. Its valuable works of art include pieces dating back to the 17th century. The town hall adds a different architectural note: it was built in 1846–1847 in the Empire style and marked the end of the historic urban axis of Długa Street.
The Pomnik Stu Straconych monument is also part of the city’s history. It stands at the site where 100 Poles were executed on 20 March 1942 and was unveiled in 1969. A visit to the monument can be combined with a walk through the city’s architectural history: the urban layout, town hall and church each tell a different part of Zgierz’s story.
Another place to visit is the Łaźnia Miejska. It opened in February 1929 and has an indoor swimming pool measuring 10 × 17 metres. These details tell the story of the building; check separately before your visit to see whether the pool is currently in use.
Pond, Walks and Trails
Tadeusz Kościuszko Park is a popular destination for Sunday strolls and features a picturesque pond with an island. At the city pond in Tadeusz Kościuszko City Park, Marina–Przystań Zgierz rents out pedal boats and kayaks. As seasonal opening arrangements may change, it is worth checking what is currently available before making plans. A walk in the park and boat rental offer two different ways to spend time by the pond.
Two marked hiking routes of different lengths are described. The blue Zgierz–Lućmierz trail starts and ends in Zgierz, is around 16 kilometres long and passes sites commemorating the martyrdom of Poles. The green Zgierz–Ciosny Nature Reserve trail also starts and ends in Zgierz and is around 9 kilometres long; the nature reserve is its destination. Comparing the distances offers an initial guide for planning a hike, but does not indicate how long either one will take. Check the route and local conditions before setting out.
The cycling routes described also differ in length: the Zgierz–Kębliny–Dzierżązna–Zgierz route covers 40 kilometres, while the route via Gieczno and Rosanów back to Zgierz covers 43 kilometres. Zgierz is also one of the points along the blue-marked “W centrum Polski” (“In the Centre of Poland”) cycle route. This route is more than 300 kilometres long and passes through Kutno, Łęczyca and Zgierz counties, as well as the city of Łódź. Check the route before setting out.
Tram line 45 runs from Zgierz to Łódź. Check the current route before travelling.
