At the synagogue in Ostrów Wielkopolski, Moorish-inspired façade decoration meets an interior with double galleries. The building was constructed between 1857 and 1860 in the former Jewish quarter. Moritz Lande, who was born in Ostrów Wielkopolski, is named as its architect. The synagogue underwent extensive renovation between 2009 and 2011. On October 6, 2011, it was ceremonially handed over for cultural use under the name “Forum Synagoga.”

Architecture and urban history

The complex of the co-cathedral also tells the story of the city: it is associated with Cardinal Halka Ledóchowski, the struggle for Polish identity and the Greater Poland Uprising. Another place of historical significance is the Old Cemetery. It is one of Poland’s oldest Roman Catholic burial grounds. Ostrów Wielkopolski lies on the edge of the Kalisz Upland and on the Ołobok River.

Ostrów Wielkopolski’s City Hall houses the city museum. The synagogue and the co-cathedral complex offer different perspectives: the focus here is on architectural history and historical connections, while the cemetery also reveals the long history of Catholic burial culture.

Parks and water in Piaski

Miejski Park is in the center of Ostrów Wielkopolski. Its features include numerous walking and cycling paths, a pond with fountains and an amphitheater. Open-air concerts and folk festivals are held there. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, check the specific dates.

In the northern part of the city, the Piaski sports and recreation center is situated by a body of water; there is also a sandy beach. A walking and cycling promenade runs around the reservoir. Pedal boats, kayaks and boats are available for hire at the reservoir. If you would like to use one of the watercraft, check availability before your visit.

Przygód Adventure Park in Piaski-Szczygliczka has three courses with different difficulty levels. Together, they are more than 500 meters long. Thus, in addition to paths by the water, the described recreational options include courses with varying levels of difficulty.

Getting around and spending time outdoors

The tourist narrow-gauge railway runs through Piaski and the streets of Ostrów Wielkopolski in summer. During the school year, it operates between Piaski and the educational trail run by ZOiGO MZO S.A., the municipal waste management company on ul. Staroprzygodzka. On the “Ekopodróże” trips, participants learn about the flora and fauna of Piaski. Routes vary by season; check the current timetable before your trip.

Cycling is also part of the local leisure offering: Miejski Park has cycling paths, and the promenade around the reservoir is intended for pedestrians and cyclists. The cycling network in Ostrów Wielkopolski is being systematically expanded.
