A painted church ceiling dating from 1714 and a landscape of islands between steep mountains show two different sides of Kviteseid. At Kviteseid gamle kyrkje, the stone walls date from the late 12th century; Thomas Blix painted 20 panels of the ceiling in 1714. The church thus combines medieval architectural history with a design from the early 18th century. At Lake Nisser, the perspective shifts from this cultural timescale to a landscape revealed through islands, mountains and water.

Walking routes and the canal

TveitgrendlĂžypa offers a 7.6-kilometre circular route and a 2.5-kilometre loop along Bandak. The shorter loop covers less distance, while the longer one is considerably longer. This lets you match the length of your walk to your schedule. There are also several hiking options in Kviteseid through Vandre Telemark, which offers well-marked trails at various locations in West Telemark. Check the conditions on the relevant route before setting out, as they may change.

You can also use the canal as a reference point when cycling: National Cycle Route 2 runs from Kviteseidbyen along the canal. Detailed route conditions may change; check them before your ride. From Kviteseidbyen, boats can travel along the canal through several locks. Timetables vary by season, so it is advisable to check the dates before making plans.

Church, farmsteads and skiing history

Kviteseid bygdetun was founded in 1907. The Tveitloftet there dates from before the Black Death; Utsondhalli presents the sculptor Gunnar Utsond. These different connections add further dimensions of cultural history to the medieval church. The municipality of Kviteseid also has a nature and cultural trail with 18 information boards.

In Morgedal, ØverbÞ is the birthplace of Sondre Norheim. The signposted trail to ØverbÞ is part of VandreTelemark and combines a place of cultural history with an outdoor walk. At Vassparken in Morgedal, children can play at rafting logs and generating electricity. The park is a 45-metre-long replica of the Morgedalsvassdraget; opening arrangements may vary. Within the wider destination of Telemark, Norsk Skieventyr in Morgedal presents skiing history, from Såmi skiing culture and polar pioneers to modern winter sports.

Events at different times of year

The events calendar also highlights two different times of year: Victoriafestivalen takes place every year in mid-June in Kviteseid, while Kviteseidmarken takes place every year in mid-February in Kviteseidbyen. Programmes may change. If one of the festivals is a deciding factor for your trip, check the latest programme details in advance.

Lake Nisser, views and activities

Lake Nisser has a distinctive landscape of islands among steep mountains. It is particularly well suited to paddling in the VrĂ„dal area. FossĂžy is home to a 9-hole golf course by the lake—two different ways to experience the landscape around Nisser. In VrĂ„dal sentrum, there is a large car park and a boat ramp directly below the grocery store.

From Roholtsfjell, the view extends across large parts of West Telemark to the mountains of Hardangervidda and Gausta. You can also see Lakes VrÄvatn and Nisser, as well as the Bandak waterway system. The perspectives on the landscape are therefore quite different: from the water and islands of Lake Nisser to the expansive view from Roholtsfjell.
