Six of the eight lock systems on the Telemark Canal are located in Nome. This makes the canal a distinctive thread for exploring the region. At the Vrangfoss lock system, you can experience how the structure and landscape meet: the facility is built directly into the rugged mountains. You can reach Vrangfoss by car, boat or bicycle. The western section of the canal, Bandakkanalen, can also be located geographically: it runs from Ulefoss to Dalen. The M/S Telemarken operates the round trip on the NorsjĂžâUlefossâLunde route. Check the timetable and operating days when planning your trip.
Volcanic traces and a lakeside swimming area
Fensfeltet reveals another side of Nome. This geologically distinctive area preserves remnants of volcanic vents and other traces of volcanism. You can explore Fensfeltet in the Gea Norvegica Geopark on your own or as part of a guided tour. This lets you discover the area independently or learn about it with a guide.
If you would rather spend your time by the water, Nomestranda is a large swimming area at the eastern end of Nomevann. The lake is about 2 kilometres long and 1 kilometre wide, and there is ample parking at the swimming area. The contrast between geologically shaped Fensfeltet and the lakeside swimming area offers two different perspectives on the landscape of Nome.
Churches, routes and industrial history
The medieval church of Romnes is one of Norwayâs best-preserved medieval churches and features authentic Baroque furnishings. A pilgrimage trail leads from Holla to Romnes and can end with a church service, a guided tour or a concert. The route therefore combines a walk through Nome with the possibility of cultural or religious experiences at the destination.
The HÄvetrunden also leads to a historical point of interest: it offers a detour to Tollefstua, where the famous hermit MalmstrÞ lived and worked for many years. The BjÞnnerunden offers a different way to explore the area. This 27-kilometre cycling loop has an elevation difference of 170 metres and passes the ruins of Holla Church. If you want to choose a cycling route based on its distance and elevation difference, these details are available.
In Ulefoss, Ăvre Verket tells the story of the townâs working history. This group of protected workersâ homes is connected to the Ulefos JernvĂŠrk ironworks and also serves as a starting point for walks and cycling trips. You can stroll in the garden around the main house of Ulefos Hovedgaard. The main route of Folkestien offers a different experience: it runs downhill alongside the Telemark Canal, is gravel-surfaced and is suitable for pushchairs.
