Vrådal offers several ways to explore the theme of water: as a place for swimming and paddling, a setting for the history of locks and a landscape for boat trips. The Slusemuseet at the Småstraum lock and trips on the M/S Fram bring the history of boat traffic and lock construction to life. Fossøy adds traces of the Ice Age and cultural history.
Water, boats and the history of the locks
The Slusemuseet is located at the Småstraum lock in Vrådal. It tells the story of Northern Europe’s highest manually operated locks and of boat traffic on Vråvatn and Nisser around the turn of the 20th century. Timber rafting and lock construction are also among its topics. The hand-operated Småstraum lock is considered the highest lock in Northern Europe.
The excursion boat M/S Fram offers a two-hour lock cruise that passes the museum and the lock. The veteran boat also operates sightseeing trips through the island landscape at the upper end of Lake Nisser. Seasonal operating details may change; check the current sailing schedule before planning.
Vrådal offers opportunities for swimming, rowing, canoeing and kayaking, and boats can be rented at several locations. What is available depends on the operator and the season. The tourist information office is in the town centre. It has a gallery dedicated to pictures by Louis Moe, as well as boat, kayak and canoe rentals. A large car park and a boat slipway are in the centre below the grocery store.
Fossøy: landscape, culture and golf
Fossøy was formed during the last Ice Age and has clear traces of kettle holes. Along the Fossøy Nature and Culture Trail, 18 signs provide information on topics such as the Straumsnes school, the Slusemuseet and the Småstraum lock. The trail thus connects geological features with insights into local culture and the history of the locks.
Fossøy is also home to a golf course. Play takes place in a landscape surrounded by Lake Nisser. Course conditions and operations may change; check the latest information before planning a game.

Kviteseid: additional culture and nature
The wider Kviteseid destination offers further cultural and natural attractions. Kviteseid bygdetun was founded in 1907. It is home to Tveitloftet, which dates from before the Black Death; Utsondhalli presents the sculptor Gunnar Utsond. Kviteseid gamle kyrkje is a stone church dating from the late 12th century. Its ceiling is decorated with 20 panels painted by Thomas Blix in 1714.

There are several hiking options in Kviteseid as part of the Vandre Telemark network, which offers well-marked trails at several locations in West Telemark. Tveitgrendløypa offers either a 7.6-kilometre circular route or a 2.5-kilometre loop along Bandak. The shorter loop runs along Bandak; the longer offers a different distance.
