Canal cruises, a cycling route and historic buildings give Vråliosen a strong connection to transport and cultural history. The full canal cruise with the M/S Fram passes through the Småstraum and Storstraum locks to Vråliosen. There is also a guided cultural heritage cruise, a cycling loop and a possible paddling route. This lets you get to know the area from different perspectives: from a boat, by bike or along the waterway.

Vråliosen by water and by bike

The guided cultural heritage cruise travels on Lake Nisser from Vrådal to Vråliosen and takes five hours. Captain Reidar Skogheim, «honorary sailor» Olav Tveitane and historian Magne Wraa share stories about the region’s cultural history and Vråliosen. Magne Wraa guides visitors through the area’s cultural history. The tour combines a specific duration with a historical perspective; sailing dates and programme details may change seasonally. Check the latest dates if you are planning to take the cruise.

On the Vråvatn rundt cycling loop, you reach Vråliosen after about half the circuit. There you can see the old Vråliosen Hotel and the guesthouse. The southwestern road section of this loop is part of National Cycle Route 2 along the Telemark Canal. This applies specifically to the southwestern section, not automatically to the entire loop. As this is a user description of the route, it is advisable to check route conditions and signage before setting off.

For paddlers, a route from Vråliosen to Treungen is possible: it covers 60 kilometres. Before setting off, check the water conditions, equipment availability and access to a launch point. The cycling route, guided boat trip and paddling route offer different ways to include Vråliosen in a trip; the stated distances and durations can help you plan accordingly.

Hotel history and historic transport routes

Vråliosen Hotel was built in 1895 in the Romantic style. Historically, it provided accommodation for travellers on the scheduled boat service between Tveitsund and Vråliosen on Lakes Nisser and Vråvatn. They could stay there before continuing over Haukeli by horse-drawn carriage. The hotel is part of a travel history in which the water connection and the onward journey overland went hand in hand.

Shipping also changed as the waterways were developed. After the lock at Storestraum was completed, the steamship «Dølen» was able to travel to Vråliosen from 1868. In the municipality of Kviteseid, the Vråvatn/Nisser waterway was once an important transport route for people and timber. The M/S Fram was restored in 1987 and put into service as a tourist boat on this waterway. Together, these dates illustrate different chapters in the region’s transport history, without implying that historic services follow today’s timetables.

Another building in Vråliosen is VAREHALL/BRYGGE. It is described as a goods warehouse and packing house dating from the fourth quarter of the 19th century. Alongside the hotel, it points to another aspect of the area’s history: storing and packing goods rather than providing accommodation for travellers.

Culture in the wider destination of Kviteseid

The wider destination of Kviteseid offers other cultural and historical attractions. Kviteseid bygdetun was established in 1907; Utsondhalli presents the sculptor Gunnar Utsond, and Tveitloftet dates from before the Black Death. Kviteseid gamle kyrkje is a stone church dating from the late 12th century. Its ceiling is decorated with 20 panels painted by Thomas Blix in 1714. These examples add a distinct cultural context in Kviteseid to Vråliosen’s transport and architectural history.

The recurring event dates also differ: Victoriafestivalen takes place every year in mid-June in Kviteseid, while Kviteseidmarken takes place every year in mid-February in Kviteseidbyen. If you would like to include either event in your trip, check the relevant programme.
