Fishing is possible at Lake Kuratau from the shore and by boat. However, shore fishing depends on the location: options are limited away from the boat ramp, while there are good opportunities near the ramp, even without a boat. It is the smallest of the fishable lakes in the TaupĆ fishery and has a high population of smaller trout. It is suitable for children and less experienced anglers. Local fishing choices therefore come down to two specific questions: shore or boatâand, for shore fishing, near or away from the ramp.
Kuratau between the bay and the lake
Kuratau lies on a shallow bay on the western shore of Lake TaupĆ; Lake Kuratau is behind the settlement on the lakeshore. Lush, gently rolling farmland surrounds Kuratau. Lake Kuratau was created as part of a hydroelectric project by flooding a forest. The townâs landscape is therefore shaped both by its location on the bay and by the unusual origins of Lake Kuratau.
Lakeside reserves and trails
Kuratauâs lakeshore is surrounded by a continuous ring of community reserves. Kuratau Esplanade Reserve includes a narrow strip of shoreline, cliffs and higher ground along the cliff edge. There is pedestrian access to the lakeshore on the north and south sides of the reserve. Pihanga Road Community Reserve provides access to the lakeshore and Kuratau Esplanade Reserve from Pihanga Road. Kuratau River Esplanade Reserve includes a popular walking trail. The reserves and their access points offer different landmarks for lakeside activities; check local trail conditions before your visit.
Market and local wine
Kuratauâs annual weekend market is held jointly with nearby Omori during Labour Weekend in October. It features, among other things, fresh local produce, wooden furniture and wooden toys. The market brings together food and woodcraft, but takes place on a specific date each year. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the exact market dates in advance. Another culinary highlight is Floating Rock Vineyard and Cafe in Kuratau, where local wine is served among the vines. The market date and the wine offering are two distinct aspects of local character.
More nature destinations in the Taupo District
The Taupo District offers nature destinations beyond the immediate lakeside landscape. Tongariro National Park and Pureora Forest Park are a short drive from Kuratau; mountain ski areas are also a short drive away. Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealandâs three World Heritage Sites. Its dual World Heritage status recognises significant MÄori cultural and spiritual associations; the Tongariro Alpine Crossing lies within the dual World Heritage area. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between lakeside and reserve experiences in Kuratau and the separate nature destinations elsewhere in the Taupo District.
