Taupo lies at the northern end of Lake Taupō, which covers 622 square kilometres. For travel planning, it helps to distinguish between Taupo itself and the wider Taupo District: In town, you’ll find the Great Lake Pathway, Ora Garden at the Taupō Museum and Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs; the Taupo District also offers national park, waterfall and river experiences, among others.
Lakeside and garden in town
Native plants grow in the Ora Garden at the Taupō Museum, alongside steaming areas shaped by geothermal activity, characteristic of the central North Island. The garden adds a distinct botanical and geothermal touch to exploring the lake.
The Great Lake Pathway starts at Taupo Boat Harbour and follows the Taupō waterfront. From the path, views stretch across the lake to Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. The route is 12.7 kilometres long, paved, shared-use and graded as difficulty level 1. It is mostly flat, with only gentle inclines, and is suitable for relaxed lakeside walks and bike rides.
Between lake and river
The Huka Falls Rotary Ride offers a different route: it runs from Taupo via Huka Falls to Aratiatia Dam, following the Waikato River. While the Great Lake Pathway follows the lakeshore and offers mountain views, this route follows the river; Huka Falls and Aratiatia Dam are the named landmarks along the way. The two routes therefore offer different landscape perspectives and are not combined into a single route.
Water experiences in Taupo
Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs has indoor and outdoor pools, two heated racing slides and an interactive warm-water play area for children. There are also private pools and spa treatments. The venue combines pools and slides with a dedicated play area and spa offerings.
In the Taupo District: larger natural and cultural areas
Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand’s three World Heritage Sites. Its dual World Heritage status recognises significant Māori cultural and spiritual associations. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing lies within the park’s dual World Heritage area.
At Huka Falls, nearly a quarter of a million litres of water per second plunges 11 metres through a natural gorge into the Waikato River. Walking tracks run along both sides of the falls, so you can take in the landscape from different viewpoints.
The Great Lake Trails pass through lush native forest, past waterfalls and across deep ravines to the waters of Lake Taupō. A boat shuttle connects different sections and offers pick-ups and drop-offs at several scenic bays along the route. If you plan to use the shuttle, check booking requirements in advance.
Another route option in the Taupo District is the Tongariro River Trail. The full loop is 13.2 kilometres long and can be started at Tūrangi isite. The shared-use path is intended for anglers, people with dogs and mountain bikers; cyclists must give way to pedestrians.
