Turangi brings together a distinctive river trail, a central community park and nearby attractions. The Tongariro River Trail is easy, mostly flat and family-friendly. There are also recreational facilities at Te Kapua Park, as well as nature and fishing experiences on the Tongariro River and in the surrounding area. You can choose between a trail, a visit to the park and other destinations.
The Tongariro River Trail
The Tongariro River Trail is a 13.2 km loop that can be started at Tūrangi isite via an underpass. Several access points offer other places to join the trail. Its length, loop format and access points provide different options for planning; the trail itself is classed as easy, mostly flat and family-friendly.
Parking for the Tongariro River Trail is available off SH1, at the end of Koura Street and at the Tongariro National Trout Centre. As parking arrangements may change, check the situation before you travel.
The river along the trail is a habitat for the endangered whio and is also a world-renowned fishery. This part of Tūrangi highlights both the river habitat and the importance of the Tongariro River for fishing.
Te Kapua Park: sport, play and local stories
Te Kapua Park is Tūrangi’s central community park. Facilities include tennis and basketball courts, as well as a skatepark. It is also home to an award-winning playground. If you’re looking for a place with a variety of recreational facilities, you’ll find sports areas and play facilities here in one spot.
The playground’s design draws on stories of the surrounding rohe. These include the Tongariro River and maunga, which are significant to the people of Tūrangi. The playground’s recreational offering is also connected to themes that matter to the local area.
